  1. Maharashtra Reveals Scary Waqf Land Encroachment, Initiates GIS Mapping

A shocking disclosure has come to light in Maharashtra in the midst of the fiery debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as the Maharashtra State Board of Waqf (MSBW) revealed that almost 50% of the state’s Waqf land—23,566 properties covering 92,247 acres—is under encroachment. The condition is most critical in Marathwada, with 60% of the 15,877 properties in this area, spanning 57,133 acres, having been occupied. The properties, donated by Muslims for religious or charitable causes, have led the BJP-led government of the state to propose the controversial bill to strengthen controls through financial audits and state interference. To address the issue, Maharashtra has issued a tender for Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to map these properties in detail. In the past, the Waqf Board has initiated 1,088 legal cases under Section 54 of the Waqf Act, 1995, to recover encroached land, but only 21 eviction orders have been executed, with 250 cases pending review and 483 pending at district collectorates in spite of Section 55 instructions. A MSBW official implicated caretakers, or muttawalis, and politicians as the perpetrators, blaming them with using these lands for their personal benefit, tending to rent them out at sub-market rates, while public welfare projects such as schools or hospitals are hard to find beyond four exceptions in Marathwada.

  1. Warm Ceremonial Welcome Greets PM Modi in Colombo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Colombo on Friday evening, with open arms at Bandaranaike International Airport, welcomed by a group of five top Sri Lankan ministers, including Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, and Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar. The visit assumed a grandeur the next morning, Saturday, when Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake received Modi with a ceremonial reception at Independence Square. This two-day visit is set to further strengthen Indo-Sri Lanka bond with perhaps 10 significant pacts in the pipeline, ranging from defense to energy security and digital cooperation. Modi-Dissanayake talks scheduled for Friday are set to mark the beginning of a new chapter of cooperation, cementing the strategic and cultural ties between these two neighboring countries in an atmosphere of geopolitical importance.

  1. Heartbreak in Noida: Children’s Pleas Ignored Before Mother’s Brutal Murder

A spine-chilling tragedy was witnessed in Noida’s posh Sector 15 on Friday afternoon, leaving two children shattered after their father, Noor-ul-lah Haider, killed their mother, Asma Khan, in a rage. The couple, married since 2005, had been embroiled in growing quarrels, with Haider accusing Asma of having an affair—a charge his 19-year-old son, Samad, a BTech student at Amity University, strongly denied. That evening, after family members spent more than five hours counseling the couple, Samad and his sister Inaya pleaded with them to take Asma away from them, concerned for her safety. Their requests fell on deaf ears, and hours later, Haider imprisoned Asma in their bedroom, muffled her screams with a pillow, and killed her with a hammer. Around 1 p.m., Inaya found her bloodied mother’s body, ushering in a chaotic moment where Samad sprinted into the room later bemoaning, “Dad shouldn’t have done that.” Police officers in Phase 1 station retrieved the weapon during a blood-drenched room and have registered a case as the family struggles to reconcile with pain and betrayal.

  1. Indian National Fatally Stabbed in Canada’s Rockland

Shockwaves ran through the Indian diaspora on Saturday morning as the Indian Embassy in Canada confirmed the brutal stabbing death of an Indian citizen in Rockland, close to Ottawa. Details are still few, but the embassy reported that local police have arrested a suspect and are looking into the incident. In an X statement, the embassy registered deep regret, assuring assistance to the family of the victim through community forums. Canadian media outlet CBC News reported a stabbing death along Lalonde Street on Friday at 3 p.m. local time, approximately 40 kilometers east of Ottawa, although it’s not certain whether this corresponds with the embassy’s version. The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating the case, leaving the community in suspense as to more details regarding this tragic incident.

Narendra Modi government will strengthen India’s military power this month when the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will clear a $7.6 billion agreement for 26 Rafale-Maritime strike jets, boosting the Indian Navy’s strength onboard its two aircraft carriers. This comes on the heels of a strong 2024-25 defense splurge of over ₹2 lakh crore, more than double last year’s ₹104,855.92 crore in 192 contracts. Coming in the wake of the Rafale deal, three more diesel-electric submarines are in line for approval, which will further deterrence in the Indian Ocean Region. Since 2014, the Modi government has signed 1,096 defense contracts amounting to nearly ₹9.46 lakh crore, and 193 worth ₹2,09,059.85 crore were signed this fiscal year alone, marking a firm push towards India’s modernizing armed forces against changing geopolitical imperatives.

  1. John Abraham Accuses Telangana Of Kancha Gachibowli Development Plans

Bollywood actor John Abraham sparked a social media firestorm on Friday, calling on Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Anumula to drop plans to cut down 400 acres of forest in Kancha Gachibowli for IT development. In an emotive X post, Abraham brought to the fore the region’s function as Hyderabad’s “green lung” and a haven for conserved wildlife, cautioning that deforestation would drive away species and increase human-wildlife conflict. His appeal finds resonance in universal protests by students and green activists, who deplore the ecological cost of the Telangana government’s move. The Supreme Court acted on Thursday, directing a standstill on all work except the preservation of trees, questioning why the state was rushing and referring to an “alarming” report of Telangana High Court, heightening the call to protect this biodiverse sanctuary.

  1. Trump Gives TikTok 75-Day Reprieve In Trade Dispute with China

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday a 75-day lifeline for TikTok, announcing plans to sign an executive order to allow the app to continue operating as his administration sorts out a hung-up spinoff deal with China. Writing on Truth Social, Trump boasted of progress in attempting to “save TikTok,” while conceding Beijing’s displeasure at his recent reciprocal tariffs but insisting on them as critical to fair trade and national security. The action comes after China halted the divestiture of TikTok’s U.S. assets, with the Chinese Embassy in Washington declaring U.S. policies as violations of the principles of the market, according to an AP report. Trump hoped that talks would continue, highlighting tariffs’ economic clout while trying to keep TikTok from “going dark” amidst growing trade tensions.

  1. Ronaldo’s Double Secures Al-Nassr’s 3-1 Triumph Over Al-Hilal

Cristiano Ronaldo proved his enduring brilliance on Friday night, scoring twice to lead Al-Nassr to a 3-1 victory over rivals Al-Hilal at Kingdom Arena in the Saudi Pro League. With Al-Hilal chasing league leaders Al-Ittihad, Stefano Pioli’s squad delivered a decisive blow to the defending champions’ title hopes. The game witnessed Al-Hilal mounting pressure early, testing goalkeeper Bento, but Al-Nassr took the reins with Ali Al-Hassan’s curled shot before halftime. Ronaldo doubled the advantage after the interval, converting a Sadio Mane pass, although Albulayhi reduced the margin for Al-Hilal. A late handball presented Ronaldo with a penalty, which he coolly sent in, confirming the victory and highlighting his starring role despite a shoulder scare of a few moments, leaving Al-Hilal with 10 matchdays to salvage their season.

  1. Mariu and Bracewell Shine as New Zealand Post 264-8 in Rain-Hit ODI

New Zealand set Pakistan a challenging 264-8 in a rain-shortened third ODI on Saturday at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval, reduced to 42 overs per side due to a soggy outfield delaying play by 90 minutes. Debutant opener Rhys Mariu scored his maiden ODI half-century with 58 off 61 balls, while a destructive 59 off 40 with six sixes by captain Michael Bracewell fueled a late onslaught of 99 runs from the last 19 overs. Daryl Mitchell added 43, going past 2,000 ODI runs in his 52nd game, with a 49.7 average. Pakistan, choosing to bowl first for the third consecutive game following defeats by 73 and 84 runs, were early on their game reducing Nick Kelly to 13, but such stands as Mariu’s 74 with Henry Nicholls and Mitchell’s 61 with Tim Seifert kept the Kiwis ahead, although Sufiyan Muqeem’s wrist-spin temporarily stalled their charge.
