The new movie on Netflix, Mary, is causing controversy among Palestinian advocates and conservative Christians. It is directed by D.J. Caruso and is about the life of Mary, Jesus’ mother. Noa Cohen stars as Mary in the movie.
Palestinian critics say casting Cohen subtly aligns the biblical figure with modern Israeli identity, ignoring the rich historical and cultural context. Conservative Christians have also voiced their discontent with the movie’s creative liberties, such as Mary’s relationship with Joseph and other deviations from religious doctrine.
The filmmakers justified their choices by emphasizing authenticity and artistic interpretation. The controversy has sparked wider debates on faith, representation, and artistic freedom.

The controversy has gained momentum in Parliament with demands for an official probe into the alleged connections.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog has gone ahead to contact Elon Musk as a facilitator of negotiation into the release of close to 100 hostages kept captive by Hamas in Gaza. It is Herzog’s view that Musk could use his sway on Donald Trump to secure a deal.
Trump has threatened to release all hostages before January 20 inauguration unless immediately released, and warned he will have “severe consequences” otherwise. Musk, a major Trump campaign donor, is being credited as instrumental in dictating Trump’s approach toward the crisis.
It is still unclear if Musk will actively participate, but his input does mark a growing new role for him as a global political intermediary in conflicts.
