Australian PM Proposes Ban on Social Media for Under-16s
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come with bold legislation that would seek to prohibit children under the age of 16 from accessing social media amid increasing concerns about online safety. The bill is seen to be brought into parliament later this year and will regulate all the big social media sites including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and X among many others. According to the Communications Minister Michelle Rowland, the legislation would hit YouTube and other Alphabet-owned platforms. Albanese pointed out that social media had harmed young Australians, saying: “Social media is doing harm to our kids, and I’m calling time on it.” He was very clear that it is not up to parents or kids to make sure that minors are not accessing the platforms but on the shoulders of the social media providers.
The bill is supported on both sides of the aisles and thus one of the world’s toughest measures against children’s access to social media. This follows a series of similar measures overseas, such as France, whose recent law has set the age limit at 15 years. However, experts say there is a technical challenge of the successful verification of age. Australia has fought back over social media abuse and recently came up with a bill that imposes fines on technology companies should they fail to address misinformation.
Actor Nitin Chauhan Dead at 35
Indian actor Nitin Chauhan dies. He was an Indian television actor who became popular because of his performances in Crime Patrol and Splitsvilla. Nitin Chauhan dead body was discovered in his Mumbai flat. According to Instagram, fellow actor Vibhuti Thakur shared a touching tribute saying she wished he could have fought his life battles. Born to the soil of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, Chauhan initially gained popularity after being declared the champion of reality show Dadagiri Season 2, 2009. His renown later increased due to his presence in some serials and television films such as Zindagi Dot Com and Crime Patrol. This was the last film through which the actor will pass on to the next world: Tera Yaar Hoon Main. The acting world mourns his death.
Sidhu Moosewala’s family posts first picture of their newborn baby brother
The family of late Punjabi rapper Sidhu Moosewala shares with us some first pictures of the youngest son Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, also known as Shubh. SECI Bans Reliance Power Over Bogus Documents, Dents Green Energy Plans
The Anil Ambani led Reliance Power has been barred for the next three years from being a participant in tenders issued by Solar Energy Corporation of India, more popularly known as SECI. The company has been accused of submitting allegedly bogus documents related to a tender for 1000 MW/2000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System project. SECI chose to cancel the entire tender since it decided that the bank guarantee submitted by Reliance was fudged. Reliance Power has threatened to go to courts saying it is a victim of fraud rather than being a fraudster.
NASA Defends Health of Sunita Williams Amid Concerns for Stranded Astronauts
The American space agency has acted to quash growing health concerns regarding astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Images of “gaunt” astronaut Sunita Williams had raised questions about her well-being. Concern continued when the SpaceX Crew-8 returned from the ISS; one member of the crew later was taken briefly
to a hospital. All astronauts, a spokesperson said, receive routine medical evaluations and assured the public of their health. Williams, who has spent over 150 days in space on the ISS, remains under close observation by medical staff. NASA’s statement came at a time when the agency was already being questioned over the physical wear and tear of long-duration space missions on astronauts.
