RBI Holds Rates Steady, Downgrades Growth Forecast
The Reserve Bank of India maintained the repo rate at 6.5% at its final monetary policy for the year amid growing calls for rate cuts in the wake of a sharp slowdown in economic growth. This follows a slide in GDP growth to a seven-quarter low for the July-September quarter of FY25.
The RBI cited inflationary risks, particularly volatile food prices, as the key reason to hold rates steady. Still, inflation remains well above the central bank’s target of 4%, with retail prices surging to a 14-month high of 6.21% in October.
Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier pleaded for rate cuts, emphasizing the need for cheap credit to boost industrial growth. The Monetary Policy Committee also trimmed its growth forecast for the fiscal year from 7.3% to 6.6%.

Babri Masjid Demolition: A Defining Chapter in Indian Politics
The demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, continues to mark a very critical point in India’s socio-political history. It strengthened the growth of Hindutva politics and changed the path of political discourse in this country.
This event catapulted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into a dominant political force, especially in North and West India, with a stark decline in the influence of the Congress Party. The BJP used the Ram Janmabhoomi movement to energize Hindu nationalist sentiments, transforming itself from a regional player into a national powerhouse.
While the Supreme Court has since ruled in favour of constructing the Ram Temple, political fallout of the demolition continues to haunt India’s electoral prospects.
