  1. Suez Canal Authority Rattles After Clip of Israeli Warship

Reacting to the viral video showing an Israeli warship transiting the Suez Canal, the Suez Canal Authority in Egypt clarified Sunday that it admits all vessels – be it commercial or military vessels to pass free of cost across the waterway. Clarifying on rising social media concerns, the authority announced that the canal had adopted the Constantinople Convention of 1888 which clearly states that there was nothing wrong with free passage granted to all ships and any ship regardless of their flag.

It showed a crowd watching the Israeli vessel fly both Israeli and Egyptian flags as it made its way from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. This video stirred significant backlash amid current tensions over the Gaza conflict. Anti-Israeli sentiment has intensified, fueled by reports and suspicions of indirect support to Israel, such as an alleged arms shipment through Alexandria. There was no question on granting military aid to Israel after the Armed Forces of Egypt released a strict denial that confirmed commitment for national stability and regional stability.

  1. Daylight Saving Time Ends – Here’s What You Need to Know

Americans adjusted their clocks an hour backward Sunday to officially end daylight saving time. Which, in its change at 2 a.m., marks earlier sunsets and longer evenings. Though giving people an extra hour of sleep, the law has its origins dating back to the Standard Time Act of 1918, when it was enacted to add hours to daylight in summer. Today, however, its need becomes a point of contention.

Although daylight saving time has its roots dating back to U.S. culture since the World Wars, it didn’t really continue to follow through uniformly in every place until the enforcement of Uniform Time Act 1966. This March, standard time will prevail until March 9, 2025, since daylight saving time will have already begun by then. It prevails in half of Europe and North America, though in the other half of Europe and in almost all of Australia, the seasons are reversed from what would occur in places which use daylight saving time. It is starting in February or March and ending in either November or December there.

  1. Suspensions at Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve Over Elephant Deaths

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav suspended two senior officials of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve after ten elephants died within days of each other. The chief wildlife conservator directed disciplinary action against the director Gaurav Chaudhary and assistant conservator Fateh Singh Ninama for their failure to report back on leave and disconnected phone number in violation of conduct rules.

Initial reports indicated that the cause of death was being probed, and it was suspected to be due to poisoning from the intake of kodo millet. The authorities, shocked by the series of deaths, sent a team to inspect the situation and assured that the detailed autopsy report would be made available soon. The whole incident has highlighted the handling and safety measures in the wildlife sanctuary.

  1. IIT Dhanbad Students’ Diwali Experiment Goes Viral

Humour and creativity has been infused in the very Diwali celebrations at IIT Dhanbad in the form of a pretty “experiment”. The viral clip shows students launching the plastic dustbin into air using a firecracker, and students cheering up and screaming as the flying dustbin passes a four-storey hostel.

Comments started pouring in where many complimented the students for the light-hearted take on the festival, while others sent in safety reminders. A user quipped, “Only IITians could make Diwali a physics experiment,” and another commented, “A fun idea, but remember safety first!”

  1. North Korea Tests Powerful Hwasong-19 Missile

North Korea’s Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile has been making the rounds in the world’s superpowers. The missile has gone as high as 7,687 kilometers and landed in the sea west of Japan, clearly a demonstration of strength at a time when geopolitical tensions are running high. It was the second test North Korea had conducted on this particular missile, following a test in December 2023.

The test was described by leader Kim Jong Un as an “appropriate military action that reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to its nuclear program.” The missile has, once again, brought along discussions on security and deterrence because it may just reach the U.S. mainland. The United States, South Korea, and Japan have condemned the launching as a violation of resolutions by the U.N. Security Council, while China called for calm and dialogue.

  1. Katy Perry to Join Kamala Harris at Pre-Election Rally

Pop star Katy Perry has been confirmed to headline a prominent rally in support of US Vice President Kamala Harris before the election. In addition to Lady Gaga and Cardi B, Perry will headline a star-studded lineup of performers headlining a rally on Election Eve in Pennsylvania. Months after she made headlines after Elon Musk gifted her a Tesla Cybertruck, her involvement has sparked debates regarding her affiliations.

Even though Musk has been an outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump, Perry’s support for Harris underlines the deep political chasm between celebrities. She has praised Harris for her resilience and leadership, and her performance is going to add momentum to the VP’s campaign efforts in key swing states.

  1. Matt Short Eyes Captaincy for Australia’s T20 Series Against Pakistan

Australian batsman Matt Short is placing himself in the contention for the captaincy for the T20 series that includes Pakistan. With Mitchell Marsh off on paternity leave, Australian selectors have their sights on leadership and with consideration of Glenn Maxwell, Adam Zampa, and Josh Inglis, it could be a task bestowed upon the Big Bash League’s Adelaide Strikers captain, Matt Short.

Short expressed interest in the position, citing that he loves making strategic decisions on the field. Though he has played fewer than 20 international matches, his leadership skills in domestic competitions have made his case stronger. The decision is yet to be announced as the team is preparing for the series.

  1. Wasim Akram’s Remarks on Kamran Ghulam’s Family Cause a Commotion

Commenting on a live cricket broadcast about the first Pakistan vs. Australia ODI, former captain of Pakistan, Wasim Akram, inadvertently focused attention on cricketer Kamran Ghulam’s enormous family of 11 brothers and four sisters. Co-panelists Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist also responded, thus forming part of what became an awkward on-air moment.

The discussion suddenly became the background of Ghulam’s family, and audience reactions were mixed. A few thought it was just play, while others considered it a poor attempt. What was brought into light, however, was that sometimes commentators need to tread fine lines when discussing personal facets of players’ lives.

  1. Abdullah Shafique Falls Ill Ahead of Australia Series

Star opener Abdullah Shafique fell ill a few days before Pakistan’s first ODI against Australia. Suffering from a mild fever, Shafique missed practice but had reportedly recovered well. His participation in the match will depend upon a full recovery.

The side that will play on November 4 comprises Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi. It hopes Shafique will be fit again for the first ODI as the board will monitor his fitness closely.

  1. India Struggles with Crushing 3-0 Series Loss to New Zealand

The Indian cricket team is experiencing a sort of interrogation after the crushing 3-0 loss to New Zealand on its home ground, the first in its history in more than 130 years. The New Zealand series exposed India without answers, amidst a strategic mix-up as well as challenging conditions for the tourists. India kept trying its strategies, as it sought to adapt a more aggressive batting approach while still going down.

Even the captain, Captain Rohit Sharma, was called into question as his average dipped to the lowest it has ever been since the start of 2024 when he took up the opening mantle. Recalling the match, Sharma asserted, “I have to change my game and have to spend more time on the crease.” Now, the aggressive approach taken by India that recently paved the way for their winning streak would be something with which they will think that they will prepare for future tests against India.
