Zomato Shares Tumble as Blinkit Expansion Woes Rise
Zomato’s rapid expansion of its quick commerce arm, Blinkit, is eating into the bottom line of the company. Financially speaking, the same is taking a toll on its Q3 results and has been severely impacting the value of the shares. Expansion costs have resulted in inflation of operational losses, thus bringing down its profitability in the quarter.
Once again, shares of Zomato dived by more than 12% in the market following the Q3 earnings release on January 20. The share price dived by about 9% at the opening of the trading session and marked the biggest decline since June 2024. However, the top merchant banking houses remain very optimistic about the long-term prospect of the company due to its strong execution strategy and market positioning.
Nomura pointed out the intense competition in the quick commerce space but remained optimistic about Blinkit’s ability to achieve a top-two market share. Jefferies and Bernstein echoed similar sentiments, stating that while Zomato’s expansion strategy is aggressive, it could also lead to further growth as Blinkit’s store count is doubled to 2,000 by the end of 2025.

Actor Yogesh Mahajan dies from cardiac arrest
Tragic loss: Television actor Yogesh Mahajan, known primarily for his character in Shiv Shakti – Tap Tyag Tandav, is dead. Yogesh Mahajan passed away due to a cardiac arrest at the age of 44. He wasn’t seen at the set that day so they went to his house, and they saw him unconscious. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The late actor is survived by his wife and young son. His untimely death has shocked the television fraternity, with colleagues and fans expressing their condolences.
Usha Vance Becomes First Indian-American Second Lady
Usha Vance is the first Indian-American Second Lady of the United States as her husband, JD Vance, swears in as Vice President. Usha Vance stood by JD Vance, having a Bible in one hand and her daughter in the other hand, during his oath-taking ceremony.
Later, President Donald Trump congratulated Usha and even commented that she was smarter than her husband and could have been his vice presidential candidate if he had asked her to run with him. The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who is the former mentor of Usha.
Trump Announces Plan to Retake Panama Canal and Rename Gulf of Mexico
In his inaugural address, President Donald Trump announced ambitious plans to recapture the Panama Canal and rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.
Trump said the Panama Canal should have never been transferred and accused China of taking control of the strategic trade artery. His statement prompted a tough reaction from Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino, who said the canal would remain in Panama’s control.
On a more positive note, Trump expressed his intent to reverse the change in the original name of Mount Denali to Mount McKinley and proclaimed that the move made by Obama was wrong.
Death Penalty for Murder of Kerala Girlfriend
A Kerala court convicted a 24-year-old woman, Greeshma, to death for murdering her boyfriend, Sharon Raj. She had taken Sharon to drink pesticide-laced Ayurvedic juice that caused Sharon to suffer for a long time before he died.
The court held that it was a premeditated crime since Greeshma had entered into a conspiracy with her uncle and mother to kill Sharon for an arranged marriage with some other suitor. The judgement has sparked extensive debates, while most people labeled it a landmark judgement in Kerala Judicial History.
Vivek Ramaswamy Declines Role in Trump Administration
Entrepreneur-turned-politician Vivek Ramaswamy, who had also sought the Republican presidential nomination, has taken himself out of a position with Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
According to sources, Ramaswamy cited his plans to seek the governor’s office in Ohio as the main reason for leaving the federal position after he was first selected to be co-leader of the department alongside Elon Musk.
He would be leaving the White House, and his successor would be named shortly.
Kerala Court Issues Bailable Warrant Against Baba Ramdev
The Kerala court has issued a bailable warrant to yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his business partner Acharya Balakrishna for misleading advertisements of Ayurvedic medicines.
The court order came following summons which were repeatedly ignored by the accused and the judiciary had to take stringent measures. The case is based on allegations that their company, Divya Pharmacy, exaggerated claims about the effectiveness of their products without scientific validation.
The next hearing is scheduled for February 1, and Ramdev’s legal team is expected to challenge the charges.
Chelsea Back to Winning Ways in Premier League
Chelsea snapped a five-match winless run in the Premier League with a resounding 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Goals from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke sealed the win, giving the team the confidence back.
Manager Enzo Maresca has praised the players for their resilience and said the team needs to carry on from here, keeping the same level of performance.
With this win, Chelsea returned to the top four, keeping hopes of a Champions League place in their minds for next season.
Paarl Royals Win to Take Top Spot in SA20
The Paarl Royals have topped the SA20 league table following a comprehensive six-wicket win over Joburg Super Kings.
Royals skipper David Miller chased a modest target of 147 by playing an important innings to hand his side the win. Earlier, Jonny Bairstow’s 60-run knock for the Super Kings was decent enough but failed to be enough for the team as it took on the mighty batting lineup of Royals.
This victory has marked Paarl Royals as firm contenders for the SA20 title.
