A powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan on Monday evening, triggering tsunami warnings for Miyazaki Prefecture, the island of Kyushu, and Kochi Prefecture. The tremors were reported at 9:19 PM local time, with the epicenter located in Miyazaki.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) urged residents to stay away from coastal areas, warning that tsunamis could strike repeatedly. Initial reports suggested small tsunamis of about 20 cm were detected at two ports in the region, while waves up to one meter were expected to reach land shortly after the quake.
Authorities confirmed the quake originated at a depth of 30 km and caused significant shaking across Kyushu. Despite the severity, no immediate injuries or damage were reported. The incident follows the devastating New Year’s Day earthquake in 2024, which claimed nearly 470 lives, marking Japan’s worst seismic event in over a decade.
