1. Shloka Mehta’s father Russell Mehta on the layoffs in his diamond business: ‘There was excess baggage in the company

Diamond industry player and Shloka Mehta’s father, Russell Mehta, recently spoke about the layoffs in his Indian entity, Rosy Blue India. He is more so known as the father-in-law to Akash Ambani. His daughter, Shloka, is married to Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s eldest son, Akash.

 

Talking to a diamond tycoon early in the year explained how his son, Viraj Mehta, helped him take critical decisions pertaining to the business. Chairman of Sheetal group, Mr. Mehta, confessed that emotional attachment towards the company and employees had kept him away from taking the practical view.

However, the practicality of Viraj made him realize how his operations needed streamlined. “Viraj made me see that there was excess baggage within the company that needed addressing,” shared Mehta. “The decision to downsize was not an easy one but it was necessary for the future of the company,” he said. This decision has come in a time when various industries across the world, even the diamond trade, face the reality of market evolution.

2. Omar Abdullah: Congress Should Reflect Over Jharkhand Failure; Victory for NC-Congress in J&K

With the alliance between the National Conference (NC) and Congress all set to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir, NC vice-president Omar Abdullah urged the Congress party to reflect on their defeat in Haryana. The BJP is set for a third consecutive term in Haryana even though exit polls had predicted the Congress will win the elections in Haryana.

Omar Abdullah has expressed surprise over the exit polls proving inaccurate, saying, “The predictions did not miss by a few seats. They just completely flipped the results.” In Jammu and Kashmir, the NC-Congress alliance has emerged as a significant political force for the first time since Article 370 was abrogated by the Centre in 2019. Abdullah’s focus, however remains on helping this alliance state an effective administration with him saying that the Congress must introspect on the reasons behind its setback in Haryana.

3. Shagun, Shamima and Sakina: The Three Elected Women From Jammu and Kashmir Assembly

When assembly elections were held in the state of Jammu and Kashmir for the first time in a decade, three women emerged victorious. Shamima Firdous and Sakina Itoo of National Conference and Shagun Parihar from the Bharatiya Janata Party were elected among the 90 members, representing merely 3.33 percent of the total elected body.

While 41 women contested the elections, only these three could get elected to the assembly. The precarious female representation only describes the struggle that continues for achieving a balance of genders in politics. Interestingly, the NC-Congress alliance bagged 48 seats, but only two Hindu candidates from the alliance won in the elections describing the electoral gravity of the region.

Animal rights organization PETA India has been howeling for the removal of the animal from the show, which has been raked with controversy this season of Bigg Boss over the inclusion of a donkey, fondly named Gadhraj. The participants have been accused of mistreating it, following which criticism has also targeted the host.

In her letter to Khan, PETA told him the telecast is distressing his donkey. The organization asked Salman Khan to use his influence to ensure the animal is taken to a sanctuary; animals are to be in protected sanctuaries rather than for entertainment, PETA said. PETA also pointed out how ethical it would be to include a donkey in the Bigg Boss house, saying it was absolutely not needed and very inappropriate.

6. Research Unveils How the Human Brain Flushes Out Toxins During Sleep

The human brain can flush out toxins with unprecedented efficiency, according to an important new study into processes that could be central in fighting off diseases like Alzheimer’s. For the first time, researchers have directly observed a network of waste-clearing channels in the living brain, confirming a system that had only been studied in animals until now.

Known as the glymphatic system, it has been found to actively employ the cerebrospinal fluid for the removal of cellular waste largely through sleep. This new discovery further fortifies the argument that sleep is essential for brain health. The new findings were put into print in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may help explain the link between sleep deprivation and neurodegenerative diseases, opening a pathway to new treatments.

7. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah’s Security Breach: Police Confiscate Janardhana Reddy’s Cars

What is considered a major security breach involving Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah happened earlier this month when the car of mining baron and MLA Janardhana Reddy crossed the road divider and entered the path of the CM’s convoy. The incident, which occurred in Gangavathi, led the police to seize three of Reddy’s luxury cars.

The accident was averred, but police officials termed it a close call, saying just two minutes might have turned the situation serious. In response, Reddy expressed irritation saying he had waited over 30 minutes for the convoy to pass before making the move. The situation throws into question security protocols and the handling of VIP convoys.

8. NC legislators to meet as J&K prepares for its first chief minister after 2018, Pankaj Sharma, Out-look

The legislators of the National Conference will meet on Thursday to seal the selection of the next chief minister for the region following the party’s victory in the assembly polls of Jammu and Kashmir. It will be the first elected government in the region since 2018 when the state assembly was dissolved following the abrogation of Article 370.

NC leader Omar Abdullah today called for the prompt formation of a government, saying, “It is time for us to get back to work.” The party legislators will be deciding if Omar should be the chief minister though his father Farooq Abdullah has been speaking in his favour. The new state government will have to meet many expectations as one of them has been the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s state status.

9. Wisconsin Teacher Charged in Sending Sexual Texts to 11-Year-Old Student

A 24-year-old teacher at a Wisconsin school has been charged with sexual assault on an 11-year-old boy whom she allegedly sent over 33,000 inappropriate text messages. Madison Bergmann has been charged with ten felonies for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with the young student.

According to court documents, the girl’s mother found the text messages because she had heard a telephone conversation between her son and Bergmann. Handwritten notes on their encounters were found in the teacher’s classroom after the search. Bergmann was already engaged to be married when she quit her teaching due to the scandal. The case against her carries heavy prison time if she’s convicted.

10. California Teacher in the Crosshairs After Awarding Bonus Grades to Students Who Do Not Pee During Class Time

A California teacher is receiving hellfire and brimstone after awarding extra academic marks to the students who abstain themselves from going to the toilet during class time. The move, first shared on social media by an irate parent, has set off an uproar in the nation. Many claim that disciplinary action needs to be taken against the teacher.

According to the parent, these students were allowed only one bathroom pass a week, and if they avoided using it, bonus points have been bestowed upon them. The event has sparked debate over student rights and teacher responsibility as others question the policies over such issues can cause health problems as well. The school is investigating the case.
