  1. Trudeau: Khalistani Separatists Do Not Represent Sikh Community in Canada

Making the first-rate observation that distinguished the Sikh community from the supporters of the Khalistan movement was Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas event at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Speaking to the audience, Trudeau said, “While there are thousands of Khalistan sympathisers in Canada, they do not constitute the whole Sikh community.” This announcement comes amidst growing tensions, especially after a recent attack on the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton by pro-Khalistan elements that stirred strong reactions amongst the Indo-Canadian population.

Trudeau condemned the violence and appealed for peace and unity, saying, “There is no place for violence or division; it is not who we are as Canadians.” He reasserted his allegiance to a unified India by underlining that his government believed in the unity of India, and its territorial integrity. In fact, he even talked about pro-Modi leaders and workers in Canada, saying they do not represent the entire Hindu Canadian community either.

Former British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosanjh responded to Trudeau’s statements, acknowledging this was the first time the Prime Minister explicitly separated the Sikh community from Khalistani sympathizers, marking a notable change in his public discourse.

  1. WhatsApp set to unveil new interactive feature modelled after Instagram

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a new interactive feature inspired by its sister app, Instagram. The new update would improve the WhatsApp Updates section with a sticker that introduces the ‘Add Yours’ feature from Instagram and will promote user engagement. The application will allow users to create posts with interactive elements such as polls, questions, and requests for content, which will make the experience more engaging.

While the new feature bears a resemblance to that of Instagram’s most-used one, WhatsApp puts much more emphasis on user privacy. Famous for its feature of end-to-end encryption, the application has ensured that responses to such interactive stickers would remain confidential, therefore maintaining the privacy of not only the contributor but also the responder.

Now, though no date has been announced so far, this new version is coming to the WhatsApp for each user soon. It is also under final stages of testing to make the utmost privacy safeguards.

  1. Vijay 69: How Anupam Kher’s Sensational performance defies ageism

Veteran actor Anupam Kher shines in this movie Vijay 69 by playing an elderly man who decides to break all stereotypes related to the elderly. The film is about Vijay Mathew, a cranky retiree who, at the ripe age of 69, decides to do something he never did earlier in life—the triathlon. But what prompts Vijay to so decide is a rather bizarre incident where his family prematurely organizes his funeral.

Praise for the movie has been mostly due to how it addressed ageism and social rejection of elderly people. Though some critics have complained that the story was too into the specifics of the triathlon competition, it was not developed enough because of Vojtech’s big mouth, other features in the emotional depth, such as situations where he held and caressed an antique relic of his lover Anna, are followed by the audience. Despite some minor hiccups, this film is being celebrated as a heartfelt representation of the struggle and strength of the elderly.

  1. New Maruti Suzuki Dzire Sets Safety Benchmark with Five-Star NCAP Rating

This new version of the Dzire has hogged the limelight after getting a top five-star rating in the voluntary safety tests for Global NCAP. The new version also packs six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and advanced pedestrian protection. These features have helped solidify its position as the safest car in the Maruti lineup, a tremendous step forward for this company’s vehicle safety.

The overall safety assessment involved the car undergoing frontal and side impact tests. On both counts, it received good ratings according to the Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation, David Ward, who says that his organization applauds Maruti Suzuki for setting a new high bar, but is really pleased with the new Dzire’s safety rating, “which marks a significant milestone and a benchmark for other models in the range”. He hopes Maruti Suzuki will carry on this direction for all of its products.

The child occupant safety, too, received good ratings on the sheet, and the vehicle continues to provide good head and chest protection. This feat will give a fillip to consumer confidence and establish a new benchmark for family vehicles in the Indian market.

  1. Zoho Sridhar Vembu Slams Freshworks for Layoffs, Stresses on Employee Welfare

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu was in the headlines this week after criticizing Freshworks for laying off 13% of its workforce despite having enough cash in its coffers. According to Vembu, “socialist” companies that think more about the interests of shareholders over those of employees are short-sighted because such decisions make employees doubt a firm’s stability and loyalty in the long run. Commenting sharply on X (formerly Twitter), Vembu asked if concentrating his focus on employee wellbeing makes him a “socialist,” adding that employees were the most significant assets of the company.

Vembu compared Freshworks’ approach with companies such as Nvidia and AMD, which have retained success over the long term by investing in their engineering talent. He cited some of the deep-tech firms out of Taiwan – such as TSMC – as examples of real capital building, driven by a strong focus on nurturing and retaining employees.

On the other hand, he condemned the strategy that makes the Intel focus on pleasing Wall Street, alleging this is what led it to decline compared to competitors TSMC and even Nvidia. Vembu’s statement has sparked a row on corporate ethics amid heated debates in the tech scene regarding the balance between financial strategies and the welfare of the employees. Freshworks Chief Executive Dennis Woodside has recently announced the layoffs as part of a restructuring plan to streamline operations.

The Zoho-Freshworks rivalry dates back to 2010 when Freshworks founder Girish Mathrubootham resigned from Zoho to start his company. Over the years, they only increased in competitive zeal, so the recent public attack by Vembu against the SaaS firm signals a very significant point in the long history between these two SaaS firms.

  1. Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud Officially Retires

The 50th Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, retired on Nov 10, marking the end of a stormy tenure that witnessed several path-breaking judgments and significant judicial reforms. He passes the baton to Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Chandrachud had his last hearing in court on Friday as his judicial career drew to an end, marked by many historic verdicts.

Right to Privacy (2017): In a landmark judgment, Justice Chandrachud talked about the sanctity of privacy as an essential right under the Constitution for personal autonomy and dignity.

Decriminalisation of Same-Sex Relationships (2018): The Supreme Court abolished Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, legalising consensual gay relationships. Justice Chandrachud in his opinion held that sexual orientation is a constituent element of human dignity.

Judgment on the Adultery Law (2018): Section 497 under which adultery was criminalized and only the man is penalized, it was held to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. It highlighted gender equality and personal liberty.

Demolition of Noida Twin Towers (2021): The Supreme Court ordered the demolition of Supertech’s twin towers in Noida on grounds of non-compliance with rules and ensuring public safety.

Delhi Government’s Authority (2023): In a very significant judgment, Justice Chandrachud consolidated authority in the hands of the Delhi elected government over administrative functions unless in respect of land and the police.

In his last speech, Justice Chandrachud paid his compliments to the new Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna; he termed him as consistent and strong. His influence, though, will reverberate through future interpretations: that will be his tribute to Indian jurisprudence.

  1. JioCinema Business Head Ferzad Palia Put on His Quid pro quo Resignation

Outbound from the Role As there are talks of a merger going around between Viacom and Network 18, the group that operates JioCinema, business head at JioCinema Ferzad Palia, has resigned. According to sources, Palia had spent more than a decade in the role. He will be passing on the responsibilities to avoid any impact during the handover.

Little wonder that in these trying times Palia has relocated to take up a new assignment at some other firm. Industry buzz: The merger of media assets between Reliance Industries and Disney India is nearly ready to be wrapped up. Much-awaited the merger will bring together major platforms such as Disney+Hotstar and JioCinema with a potential powerhouse holding a portfolio of over 100 channels across various TV genres and two leading OTT services.

This regulatory approval has already put the house in motion for the consolidation of Network18 Media & Investments with TV18 Broadcast and E18, which marks a huge change in the Indian landscape, and the merger is looking towards the third quarter of FY25 with an objective of putting together the resources and delivering a healthy entertainment offering to the consumer.

  1. Sanju Samson’s Century Powers India to Victory in 1st T20I Against South Africa

Thrillingly, India began the T20I series and thank Sanju Samson’s explosive century, the Indians went on to comfortably defeat South Africa by 61 runs at Durban. Samson very convincingly struck some classy 107 off just 50 balls. The Indian innings read 202/8 thanks to his innings. There came mighty strokes-7 fours and ten colossal sixes which he managed to club with good coordination.

India’s spinners, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi stole the spotlight as they tore the South African batting apart. The hosts were bowled over for 141 in just 17.5 overs. Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan and Chakravarthy sent the South African top order packing in the power play that set stage for the Indian team to assert their dominance.

This was also a personal milestone for Samson himself, as he became the first Indian batter to score successive T20I hundreds. The opening partnership between his aggressive start and Suryakumar Yadav helped lay the platform for India’s innings. South Africa’s captain Aiden Markram had a poor decision going with bowling first as it wasn’t easy for him to get going, though he ensured that his middle order did not completely collapse under pressure from India’s spinners.

Victory will eventually set the platform for an exciting series with both teams pushing to gather momentum ahead of upcoming international matches.

  1. Suryakumar Yadav’s Heated Exchange with Marco Jansen Sparks Tension in Durban T20I

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav was recently involved in a heated argument with South African players Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee, as seen in the first T20I match between India and South Africa. This occurred in the 15th over, when South African pacer Marco Jansen began arguing over his positioning while Sanju Samson tried to catch the ball for India.

Matters came to a boiling point when Suryakumar stepped forward to confront Jansen and Coetzee on the field. The Indian skipper, who is normally an extremely calm man, was agitated, gesticulating as he drove his point home to the on-field umpires. The situation added another taut dimension to what was already an electrifying match, with the two teams trading blows with sharp words before the umpires intervened to cool the fire.

The situation reveals an encouraging series as both the teams look to overpower each other early on in the series. The verbal duel has now preconditioned the apparently engaging battle that the two cricketing superpowers will have.

  1. Heinrich Klaasen Joins the Elite Club with 100 Sixes in a Calendar Year

South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen became the fourth player in T20 history to hit 100 sixes in a single calendar year when he produced the shot that did the job for him during the first T20I against India. That was the sixth six of 2024 for Klaasen.

To achieve this, Klaasen joins such an elite circle of a bunch of West Indians who represent no one but the West Indies. Few are more iconic than Chris Gayle, who managed this on six occasions. Others who made it to this list at least once include Nicholas Pooran and Andre Russell.

But South Africa lost out in this match against the stiff total set by India. Klaasen scored 25 off 22 balls with a six to take home the record, but it didn’t help his team win the day. The middle-order batsmen for South Africa – Tristan Stubbs and David Miller- look forward to putting on better performances in the remaining matches of the series.

He has built quite an impressive career so far, and surely one looks forward to seeing how Klaasen will be at the workplace as the T20I series advances.
