1. Brij Bhushan Reacts as Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia Join Congress: ‘Hooda Wrote the Script’

Responding sharply to the wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, joining Congress ahead of the Haryana assembly elections, former chief of Wrestling Federation of India and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh targeted top Cong leaders on Saturday. He also said that this political game had been planned two years ago. He was referring to the wrestlers’ protests against him, involving serious allegations of sexual harassment.

Brij Bhushan furthered that the plotting against him and WFI began as early as January 18 two years ago and key Congress figures were at the helm, including Bhupinder Hooda and Deepender Hooda. He said the whole protest was scripted political drama to benefit the Congress Party. He further leveled allegations that Bhupinder Hooda and the other leaders of the Congress party were perpetrating a fraud on the people of this state, saying that it was not to save the honor of women but to further their political interests. He asked the people of Haryana to identify this conspiracy and throw out these elements.

2. The Rise of Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh’s Political Crisis

Since the fall of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has seen a disquieting rise in the influence of Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, or JeI. The interim government, under the pro-western Mohammed Yunus and Army Chief General Waker-us-Zaman, has failed in the restoration of rule of law. The situation has further deteriorated with JeI gaining the limelight, even at the cost of Khaleda Zia’s BNP.

With its alliances with ultra-Islamist outfits like Hefazat-e-Islam and Ansar-ul-Bangla Team, the growing political clout of JeI seriously threatens the democratic polity of Bangladesh. Intelligence reports suggest that the rise of JeI is also affecting the student leaders, thus solidifying Islamist ideology within the country. The Bangladesh Army-or for that matter, the Yunus-led government-has been unable to contain the spiraling violence against Awami League workers and the Hindu community, with the military largely remaining passive.

This development has sent alarm bells ringing in New Delhi, as security planners are wary of JeI’s clout, considering its historical role in nurturing extremist outfits like the SIMI and Indian Mujahideen. From here on, the political turmoil, combined with a fragile caretaker government at the helm of affairs and increasing Islamist radicalization, may deteriorate the already deplorable security environment and economy of Bangladesh. A regrouping of the Awami League workers and their confrontation with the forces backed by the JeI in the coming months cannot be ruled out.

3. Fresh Violence in Manipur Kills Three in Jiribam District

Fresh violence swept through the Jiribam district in Manipur, which saw at least three people dead, a day after the militants fired rockets in Bishnupur, killing an elderly man and injuring five others. The fresh killings are part of ongoing ethnic clashes that have racked the region for more than one and a half years.

According to the security forces deployed in the area, casualties are likely to increase as the gunfight between militants and villagers of the area continued. The casualties are from both the Kuki and Meitei communities-a sign of the growing ethnic gulf in the state. The ongoing violence has been marked by the use of sophisticated weapons, like rockets and drones, which has further intensified the violence.

The situation further worsened on the intervening night of Friday when mobs in Imphal attempted to loot weapons from the headquarters of 2 Manipur Rifles and 7 Manipur Rifles, but were thwarted by security forces. In response, the Manipur administration has ordered all educational institutions to keep their doors shut as the situation remains volatile. The attack, using rockets for the first time in Friday’s incident, escalates the conflict significantly, with rifles and grenades already being used liberally.

4. IndiGo Apologizes for Inconvenience on Delhi-Varanasi Flight

Budget carrier IndiGo on Saturday apologised to its Delhi-Varanasi flight passengers who suffered discomfort as the aircraft air conditioning malfunctioned. The airline explained that the problem was not in the air conditioner of the aircraft itself but sudden dip in temperature resulted in heating of the cabin thus creating panic among the passengers.

IndiGo said in a statement, ” IndiGo regrets the inconvenience caused during the flight 6E 2235 operating on September 5, 2024. It reiterated that the temperature inside the cabin was regulated upon passengers’ demand and crew complied with their requests till it got sorted out. Despite the denial of any technical faults, the incident has raised questions about how IndiGo responds to the in-flight issue.

5. Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ Delayed, Vidya Balan’s Indira Gandhi Series Also Awaits Clearance

Kangana Ranaut took to social media to express her frustration over the delay in the release of her directorial venture “Emergency.” The film, in which Kangana played the role of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is still waiting for clearance from the CBFC. As per Kangana, objections raised by the Sikh community on their depiction in the film are being considered one of the reasons for this delay.

However, Kangana’s film is not the only delayed film in the making. Vidya Balan’s much-anticipated biopic, adapted from journalist Sagarika Ghose’s book “Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister,” is also yet to get a thumbs up. While it was conceptualized as a film by the actress, later the role of Indira Gandhi by Vidya was planned as a web series with director Ritesh Batra. However, despite the change in format, there has been more than one delay in this project, and on several occasions Vidya did express her frustration for its dragging.

Vidya Balan was also offered to play the lead for former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa in the latter’s biopic “Thalaivi.” However, she reportedly refused it due to her commitment to the Indira Gandhi project.

6. Riyan Parag’s Emotional Exit in Duleep Trophy Leaves Commentators Puzzled

An always-expressive Riyan Parag, on the third day’s play of this Duleep Trophy match between India A and India B, was visibly frustrated. The confidence in starting the day with 27 runs saw Parag set for a big score until a slice of bad luck in the 39th over.

India B’s left-arm pacer Yash Dayal bowled a leg-side straying delivery, which the batsman Parag misjudged in line and tried to flick. An edge flew to India A wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Parag looked upset at the fall of his wicket as he stood in disbelief first and furiously hit his bat against his pad and walked back to the pavilion, shaking his head.

The commentators thought Parag was being belted for his reaction, as if he was speculated to be discontent for the decision. Replays though indicated that Parag did edge it, and he was frustrated due to the way he got out, not because of the decision being overturned against him. This wicket also ended a promising partnership that was being built up between Parag and KL Rahul, which indeed was a big wicket for India B.

7. Inside the Ambanis’ Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration

Ganpati Bappa’s arrival was accorded full State honour at Antilia, the residence of India’s most powerful family-the Ambanis-on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The newest bride and groom of the family, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, were the cynosure of all eyes in the celebrations as they were seen bringing home the presiding deity, ‘Antilia Cha Raja’.

First Ganesh Chaturthi as a bride, Radhika Merchant wore an impeccable red sharara set, heavily embroidered with gold. A sleeveless kurta, backless, and flared sharara pants made for great wear. A matching net dupatta and gold jhumkis completed her look along with, of course, the mangalsutra. Nita Ambani joined in with Mukesh Ambani for performing the rituals and raised the nobility of the entire event.

Anant Ambani was spotted adorning a rich diamond Krishna brooch; a snap clicked by the paparazzi raised the already stunning look of the family. The Ambanis are known for making each Ganesh Chaturthi a larger-than-life celebration, and it is no different this year also.

8. ‘Call Me Bae’ By Amazon Prime: A Sore Disappointment

In fact, the latest series airing on Amazon Prime, “Call Me Bae,” starring Ananya Panday, has failed to impress the audience. By Collin D’Cunha, it has failed to live up to the expectation because of the slow pace and average storyline.

The series is centred around Bella Choudhary, played by Ananya Panday, whose life has been staged like a reality show. From the promising pilot episode, the series gets increasingly deflated, and efforts at humanizing Bella fall flat. It gets neither here nor there, with viewers waiting for that magic spark that never quite comes.

Although the series has tried to pot Bella’s loneliness and her bad judgment calls, it fails to hold the attention of its audience and turns out to be a forgettable one. Despite that, some may consider “Call Me Bae” to be somewhat of an attempt at masala-film-esque but devoid of the oomph factor required to carry it off effortlessly.

9. Manav Kaul on the Decline of Content Quality on OTT Platforms

The continuously growing OTT space has raised a question amongst a few on-ground experts, vociferously, whether the standard of content is deteriorating. The critically acclaimed actor Manav Kaul of “Ghoul” and “The Fame Game” fame calls upon the need for respect and encouragement of writers.

Kaul says that the freedom given to writers, which came with the advent of OTT platforms, has not been sustained. He feels that the lack of value placed by society on the writer has resulted in the quality of content produced falling. The reversal in trend and improvement in quality of content will be celebrated by the writers and their contribution, according to Kaul.

The actor’s sentiment basically voicing the growing concern within the industry about quantity versus quality in the rapidly expanding OTT landscape. As the platforms continue to churn out content at a relentless pace, high standards will be key to long-term success.

10. Pakistani Businesswoman Spared Punishment in Road Rage Incident After Victims’ Family Forgives Her

Natasha Danish belongs to a powerful and influential business family in Pakistan. She has been acquitted of all legal punishment in a fatal road rage incident. Danish, while driving a luxury SUV, had struck and killed the paper seller Imran Arif and his daughter Amna Arif employed at a private firm.

The outrage has turned to calls for condemnation of all kinds, online, as videos regarding the accident have been released that show Natasha Danish had lost control of her vehicle and hit the motorcycle of the victims flying. The videos also caught her looking incoherent, unresponsive, and unconcerning towards the gravity of the situation that just occurred.

Despite the public outcry, the victims’ family decided to forgive Danish; hence, she was exonerated from the law. The case took large limelight as it showed the sharp divide between how the rich are treated versus common lower-middle-class persons in Pakistan.

11. OnlyFans Owner Earns Over $1 Billion in Three Years

Leonid Radvinsky, the owner of OnlyFans, reportedly has drawn more than $1 billion in dividends from the business over the past three years. In the last fiscal year, he took home $472 million in dividends, according to financial filings in the UK.

OnlyFans is an adult-content platform, though, that enjoyed a phenomenal surge in its popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has a wide-ranging creator base that also comprises comedians, chefs, and personal trainers apart from traditional adult content creators on the platform. London-based and owned by Radvinsky through Fenix International Ltd., the company has kept thriving by the day, with Radvinsky’s earnings reflecting the success that the platform has attained.

That’s why it keeps growing: because the platform was able to create more diversified content and reach a wider audience. Despite all the controversy surrounding it, OnlyFans stayed popular and financial, as it faced increased competition.

12. Indian Tax Authorities Seek $101 Million from Byju’s Amid Insolvency Proceedings

The Indian tax department is seeking $101 million in dues from the bankrupt ed-tech firm Byju’s. For Byju’s, once worth $22 billion, a spate of turmoils seems never-ending. First came the regulatory problems, then a tussle with American lenders claiming dues to the tune of $1 billion.

The insolvency proceeding of the company is being managed by court-appointed Resolution Professional Pankaj Srivastava, who has invited claims from creditors, employees, vendors, and the government. The Indian government’s Department of Revenue has filed a claim for $18.7 million, while the tax department in Karnataka, where Byju’s is headquartered, has filed one for $82.3 million.

These are some of the central claims that indicate how grim the financial troubles of Byju’s have become over recent months. The company has also been criticized by the employees over delays in employee salary payments and non-payment of withheld taxes. As the insolvency process proceeds, the true extent of Byju’s liabilities is very likely to be disclosed
