1. Aishwarya Rajesh demands toilets on film locations: “I may have my vanity van, but what about others?
Aishwarya Rajesh, Tamil actress, feels that some basic requirements of women are still not being met on the film sets, such as providing accessible toilets. She also acknowledges the fact that she, being a star heroine, might have more facilities provided, including a vanity van. However, she is worried about those who don’t have privileges like she does. The demand for better facilities for women has gained momentum in Tamil cinema since a committee was formed to work for sexual harassment.
Inspired by a similar report from the Hema Committee report in the Malayalam film industry, where several harassment cases were exposed, Tamil cinema is now taking steps toward being accountable. A committee has been established by the Nadigar Sangam, Tamil Nadu Actors’ Association, to address issues regarding sexual harassment. Actor Rohini, who chairs the committee, especially said that complaints will be shared with cyber police and punishments would be stern against people with charges found guilty, including a five-year ban from the industry.
2. Novel Blood Test Can Potentially Identify Early Risk of Diabetes in Children
Researchers have, for the first time, developed a blood test that can identify children who are at the high risk of developing diabetes and other obesity-related health problems. Scientists at King’s College London have found that lipid profiles-fats contained in blood plasma-can serve as an early warning system for these conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and liver dysfunction, in children.
It truly shakes the conventional thinking that cholesterol is the primary culprit behind obesity-induced problems. Instead, the study published in Nature Medicine points to a group of lipid molecules affecting health risks such as blood pressure and insulin resistance, which actually occur without regard for the child’s weight. This might also prove to revolutionize the means by which such conditions are diagnosed, providing more opportunities for the healthcare professionals to intervene early and use more focused treatments.
Lipid profiles of a control group of 1,300 obese children were investigated and one year later the researchers concluded that the lipids associated with diabetes and high blood pressure had decreased in this group of children even though their BMI was still not significantly improved.
3. High Court Cancels Appointment of 935 Nagaland Police Constables
The Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has cancelled the appointments of 935 Nagaland police constables owing to some irregularities identified in the recruitment process. Delivering the ruling, justice Devashis Baruah ordered the state government to conduct a fresh recruitment process so that it is transparent and fair.
The decision comes after the High Court has ruled that a group of unemployed youth’s writ petition challenging the appointments made between January 2018 and October 2019 was valid. The petitioners argued that recruitment was in “backdoor” selections where appointments were made without following proper procedure – missing in issuance of public advertisement.
The court ruling orders the Nagaland government to advertise the posts in the newspapers of the localites and fill the new recruitment within six months.

6. Qualcomm May Take Over Intel in Potentially Historic Deal
This is going to be a record-breaking merger: Qualcomm is poised to gobble down its ailing competitor, Intel. Tech enthusiasts may soon see the gigantic merger take place between Qualcomm and Intel as reported by the Wall Street Journal, as Qualcomm is mulling over acquiring Intel. That will be the biggest M&As in the tech world surpassing Microsoft’s $69 billion deal for Activision Blizzard.
While both firms are keen to catch the rising wave of demand for AI technologies, Intel has exposed itself even further with recent mishaps. The chipmaker’s stock has declined a whopping 60% this year, and while it is likely to get an award of $8.5 billion to build U.S. factories, the company has committed technical blunders over the past years.
If the deal actually goes through, it is likely that Qualcomm would be forced to divest parts of Intel to other buyers to avoid antitrust scrutiny.
