For instance, Iraq has been said to be on the brink of passing the law that would allow girls as young as 9 years old to be married on the grounds that this would cover for the Sharia law. The amendment is also said to impose lower ages for consent through which most rights previously accorded to women will be withdrawn, including money and inheritance, and also custody rights. Groups vying for women’s rights have ridiculed such a move, stating that such an action would push Iraqi society backwards.
Dr. Renad Mansour is a senior research fellow at Chatham House: This one has never been more popular, in large part because of the lobbying of Shia political groups. “This could pass any moment. It’s a major move towards building powers and rolling back women’s rights,” he said. Critics worry that Iraq will begin to emulate more austere regimes like Taliban-ruled Afghanistan if the law gets passed.
