Biggest Story In India Headlines 13th December 2024
India’s rising chess star, D Gukesh, has achieved a monumental milestone by clinching the World Chess Championship title at just 18 years old, making him the youngest ever to do so. The win over reigning champion Ding Liren marked the culmination of a stellar year that also saw Gukesh win the Chess Olympiad in a historic performance and become the youngest player to surpass an FIDE rating of 2750.
He also replicates the path set for himself by his role model and hero, Viswanathan Anand, India’s first-ever Grandmaster in chess. Gukesh, now following his illustrious mentor to reach an ever-improving zenith is going the right way when at an age not dissimilar, Anand too rose up for his nation on this side of the world without even grabbing a world championship, that did much for boosting interest for chess among millions across his motherland.
The Indian government’s plan to introduce ‘One Nation, One Election’, a move which seeks to conduct simultaneous state and national polls, has created an uproar in Parliament. Even as BJP leaders and allies saw it as a step to efficiency and stability, opposition parties saw the bill as anti-democratic.
The bill was opposed by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh who wanted it to be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for a thorough examination. Other opposition leaders expressed fears over its ability to play up the big brother syndrome and defeat the federalism deal. The political temper continues to run high, with the bill introduced during the winter session now heading the debate circles.
Former chess world champion Magnus Carlsen, who relinquished his title in 2022 citing a lack of motivation, has declined to challenge newly crowned champion D Gukesh. Carlsen stated, “I’m not part of this circus anymore,” signaling his disinterest in returning to the title race.
Though Carlsen leaves the championship scene, he indeed congratulated Gukesh. He described the young boy as a favorite to win and so did the chess world’s most glamorous competition. Carlsen’s unavailability in the most prominent games has fans thinking about when the rivalry between the legends will be seen again.
Actor Keerthy Suresh, a popular film personality, married businessman Antony Thattil in a private ceremony held in Goa. Keerthy’s close family and friends attended the wedding. The bride was looking resplendent in a traditional red saree and exquisite jewelry, while Antony had a classic outfit.
Keerthy was ecstatic and took to Instagram sharing a series of pictures that covered their rituals, family moments, and even a cameo by their pet dog, Nyke. The post was captioned “#ForTheLoveOfNyke” and received love from the fans and other celebrities rather quickly.
Netflix’s rom-com hit, ‘Mismatched’, is returning for its third season with Rohit Saraf and Prajakta Koli. The new installment drops on December 13, promising complexities in young love, technology, and self-discovery.
The series is a ‘mess of chaos, cuties, and cold coffee,’ promising wilder twists and relationships. With the previous seasons enjoying immense popularity, the fans are waiting eagerly to see the new chapter of this coming-of-age saga.

The Bombay High Court has admonished the state police and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for failure to tackle the illegal hawking menace in Mumbai. It has ordered the authorities to deploy additional forces and take immediate measures to remove unauthorized hawkers from the public roads.
Highlighting lapses in enforcement, the court observed, “Public roads cannot be turned into hawking zones.” The bench also underlined the necessity of a systemic approach to validate the licenses of hawkers and to resolve issues related to vending zones.
West Indies debutant Amir Jangoo hit a match-winning century to help his team chase 321 runs and win the 3-0 ODI series against Bangladesh. The 132 runs that Jangoo managed with Keacy Carty in tandem turned the tide of the game from a shaky start, and was one of the Windies’ highest successful chases in ODI history.
Though Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan have produced outstanding knocks for Bangladesh, West Indies dominated in all matches with an all-round comeback into the limited-over format.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Dejan Kulusevski rescued a vital draw against Rangers in a high-stakes UEFA match. Rangers dominated early proceedings, with Hamza Igamane putting the Scottish side ahead, but Kulusevski’s late goal salvaged a point for Spurs.
For the home team, goalkeeper Fraser Forster had a number of key saves to deny Tottenham from the match, and Spurs are left on the outside of automatic qualification to the next round of the tournament, although they are on the same number of points as Chelsea with games in hand.
