In an unimaginable marriage of Hollywood panache and Olympic pomp, Tom Cruise left viewers at the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony aghast with some of his death-defying stunts. Not one to back off from performing adrenaline-fueled scenes, Cruise took the stage quite literally with a breathtaking roof jump and riveting motorbike stunts that wrapped up the Summer Games in style.
It was none other than the setting for a truly memorable moment—the Strate De France, which happens to be one of the biggest stadiums in the world. Cruise was chosen to be the final act for the event, and boy, did he fail to disappoint the audience one bit. The moment the actor leaped off the roof of the enormous stadium to land graciously on the stage below, the atmosphere turned electric.
At that moment, Cruise stood tall and powerful, which sent the crowd wild and the stadium in cheers because it was simply representing the feel of games—bold, fearless, and unstoppable.
But Cruise’s involvement didn’t end with the jump. Touchdown: On-stage awaited Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who was just passed the Olympic baton from Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. In what was a symbolic relay of the Games from Paris to Los Angeles, Cruise took the baton and put his own brand stamp on the ceremony.
Cruise jumped on his motorcycle, cranked up the excitement at full throttle, and sped out of the stadium, carrying the baton through the streets of Paris. In the background was the iconic tune “By The Way” by Red Hot Chili Peppers, adding to the high-energy vibe of the performance. The star’s journey through the city culminates in him riding into a plane, seamlessly blending live action and pre-recorded footage.
But that wasn’t all of the spectacle. He was pre-recorded, showing Cruise diving from the plane, then using a parachute down toward the Hollywood sign. He attached the Olympic rings to the iconic landmark in what seemed like a gesture, passing the right to host the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games. The cinematic sequence became not only a loving nod to the actor’s penchant for performing death-defying acts but also a setting-up-what-is-to-be an unforgettable experience in LA.
It wasn’t that Tom Cruise was simply tacked on at the very end. Cruise really kept the Olympic Games close throughout the summer, even kicking things off by showing up for the opening ceremony on July 27. Ariana Grande, Steven Spielberg, Sarah Jessica Parker—he was not alone in representing A-list celebrities, reported to have stopped by some of the events, bringing a little bit of Tinseltown magic to the games.
Adding to his laurels, a day before the inauguration, Cruise was also awarded the highest order—the Knight of the Legion of Honour—by Rachida Dati, France’s Minister of Culture. It made a statement that he had truly earned through his work and influence in cinema, and the Olympics, with regard to global cultural events.
Paris 2024 is going to be etched into the memory not only for the great feats of athleticism on display but also for the way the city cleverly incorporated iconic Parisian landmarks into the games. From the Eiffel Tower to the Château de Versailles, the capital of France turned its historical places into magnificent backdrops for the world’s most fabulous sporting event. The scale of the opening and closing ceremonies, which included international superstars such as Celine Dion and Lady Gaga, certainly raised the bar for future hosts.
With the baton now passed to Los Angeles, the expectations cannot be higher. Mayor Karen Bass revealed a peek into what is in store, saying that “We will really show the diversity and the international character of our city. And we do have Hollywood, so I expect a lot of magic—opportunities, which might begin at the closing ceremony.”
It will take the Olympic Games to new heights, blending rich cultural diversity with all the razzle-dazzle of the entertainment capital of the world at its command in Hollywood. The excitement just keeps building, and if Tom Cruise’s performance in Paris was anything to go by, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics is going to be a show like no other.
