Cricket fans were left stunned for a brief moment when a speed gun clocked Mohammed Siraj delivering a ball at a staggering 181.6 km/h during the day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide. This was not only a throwback to Shoaib Akhtar’s record of 161.3 km/h in 2003, but it also led to a meme fest on social media.
The misreading happened at the 25th over of Australia’s innings, where Siraj delivered a short ball to Marnus Labuschagne, who steered it for a boundary. Fans took to social media to make fun of the glitch and turned the moment into an online sensation.
While there was an issue with the technical set-up related to Siraj’s “record-breaking” delivery, the ICC may penalise him for a different incident in the over. Siraj got frustrated seeing that Labuschagne was withdraw due to distraction near the sightscreen and threw the ball towards the batter which is against the ICC rules.
