  1. Meet the NIA Duo Flying 26/11 Suspect Rana Home to India

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recruited two Jharkhand cadre stalwarts—Ashish Batra and Jaya Roy—to head the extradition of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, from the U.S., officials disclosed Thursday.

Batra, a 1997-batch IPS officer and NIA Inspector General since 2019, has a tough career resume: from heading Jharkhand’s anti-insurgency Jaguar team to being the state police spokesman and taking on Naxal ops as IG Abhiyan. His pre-NIA assignments include a short stint as assistant SP in Jehanabad, Bihar, SP postings in Koel Karo and Hazaribagh, and 19 months as city SP of Ranchi, along with governor security duty.

One colleague called him a “relentless taskmaster,” remembering how Batra, not content with arresting four out of ten Naxals, pursued the remaining ones—later spearheading a Naxal assets survey under the UAPA. Jaya Roy, an IPS officer of the 2011 batch and NIA Deputy IG, joined in 2019 and created a splash busting Jamtara’s cyberfraudsters. This couple’s persistence together means Rana, 64, will see India’s justice after his U.S. legal attempt failed.

  1. Gold Shoots Above $3,200 as Recession Fears Envelop Markets

Gold shone brighter than ever Friday, breaking through $3,200 an ounce early in Asian trade—a 1.3 percent rise—on jittery investors taking refuge as global economic fears grew. The metal broke Thursday’s record, recording more than 3 percent gains two consecutive days, after Trump’s tariff rollercoaster—suspending increases for 90 days but imposing 145 percent tariffs on China—set U.S. stocks, bonds, and the dollar tumbling.

Wall Street’s recession jitters, unruffled by the lull, further boosted gold’s safe-haven appeal, even as White House Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett boasted of “well-advanced” trade negotiations. A 20 percent gain this year has much to thank Fed rate-cut expectations for—traders now wager on three, perhaps four, following March’s mild inflation reading—and central bank stockpiling.

“Gold’s got legs,” UBS’s Dominic Schnider declared on Bloomberg TV, looking to Fed actions as the next catalyst. At 8:43 a.m. Singapore time, spot gold hit $3,215.73, up 1.2 percent, with silver and platinum climbing too, while the dollar sagged for a fourth day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi rolls into Varanasi on Friday, April 11, for his 50th visit as PM, armed with a ₹3,884 crore gift bag of 44 projects, announced Kashi BJP chief Dilip Patel.

The day begins with a public rally at Mehdiganj on the Ring Road—chosen for rural accessibility—where Modi will unveil 19 projects worth ₹1,629.13 crore and lay foundation stones for 25 more at ₹2,255.05 crore. Security tight, with 4,000 personnel—six SPs, eight ASPs, 33 DSPs, along with PAC and paramilitary forces—protected by rooftop patrols, CCTV, and drones, according to Commissioner Mohit Agarwal.

It’s an early morning activity, allowing rural people to return by lunchtime, mixing development with constituency affection.

  1. Siemens Spain CEO Agustín Escobar and Family Killed in Helicopter Crash

  1. India Seeks U.S. Trade Deal in 90-Day Tariff Window

India’s taking a golden 90-day opportunity to clinch a trade agreement with the U.S. to avoid renewed tariffs following Trump’s Wednesday change lowering reciprocal levies to a 10 percent floor for all but one partner—145 percent for China now—officials said Thursday. If the negotiators clinch a draft Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by July, America could do away with additional tariffs on India after a pause, two sources indicated.

“Both sides are working round the clock for a Trump-term victory,” one of them said, citing Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s American sojourn and a follow-up American delegation’s New Delhi visit—the first during Trump’s tenure. Phase one is aimed at winning fast, and a larger agreement is linked to Modi and Trump’s “Mission 500” to raise trade from $200 billion to $500 billion in 2030. Seafood exporters, particularly shrimp vendors, sleep better knowing this lifeline is available.

  1. Lightning and Hail Claim 25 Lives Across Bihar

Thursday turned deadly in Bihar as lightning strikes and hailstorms claimed 25 lives, PTI reported, with a weather change that provided relief to Delhi with clouds and light showers. The Chief Minister’s Office estimated Nalanda as the worst-hit with 18 deaths, two each in Siwan and one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad. RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, however, claimed over 50 perished, lamenting losses to storms, falling trees, and walls on X, offering condolences.

Delhi, meanwhile, hit 40.9°C at Ridge and 40.2°C at Ayanagar, with Safdarjung logging 39.6°C—4.5 degrees above normal—per the IMD, which predicts more drizzle through April 12. Bihar’s tragedy starkly contrasts Delhi’s respite, underscoring nature’s dual face.

  1. Bengaluru’s Water Bills to Surge with ₹1.90/Litre Tariff Hike

Bengaluru residents prepare for sticker shock as Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) prepares to hike water rates to ₹1.90 per litre from May, Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar informed journalists Tuesday. An official notification can be anticipated April 10 to address a ₹80 crore monthly shortfall—expenditure’s ₹200 crore versus ₹120 crore revenue—fueled by a 10-year run of rising costs: electricity 107 percent, maintenance 122.5 percent. “We’re an autonomous body, no subsidies, just water charges,” Manohar said, citing population growth and sprawl. The plan tiers rates for homes and businesses, with a 3 percent annual bump, aiming to boost service amid rapid urbanization. For India’s tech hub, it’s a pricey fix to a pressing need.

  1. KL Rahul’s Heroics Lift Delhi Capitals Over RCB

Delhi Capitals stayed unbeaten in IPL 2025, toppling Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six wickets Thursday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Skipper Axar Patel won the toss and opted to bowl, a call that paid off as DC’s attack stifled RCB after Phil Salt and Virat Kohli’s blazing start fizzled with Salt’s run-out. RCB limped to 163, salvaged by Tim David’s 37 off 20, but KL Rahul stole the show.

His unbeaten 93 off 57 balls powered DC home, cementing their perfect run while RCB, led by Rajat Patidar, slumped to their second home loss in five games despite away wins against Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Rahul’s masterclass was the night’s undisputed headline.

  1. Ganguly’s Call for Dhoni’s CSK Return Proves Prophetic

Sourav Ganguly’s crystal ball was spot-on as he championed MS Dhoni’s return to Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) captaincy just before it became official Thursday, following Ruturaj Gaikwad’s season-ending elbow injury.

“Dhoni’s a different beast as captain,” Ganguly told PTI, hours before CSK confirmed the switch after Gaikwad’s hairline fracture—sustained against Rajasthan Royals—sidelined him despite a gritty 63 and two more games. With CSK reeling from four straight losses, Dhoni, 43, steps back into the hot seat he last occupied during 2023’s title triumph. Ganguly praised Dhoni’s enduring six-hitting prowess—103 runs in five matches this season—though his finishing flair has waned. The legend’s first game back as skipper promises a shot of adrenaline for a faltering five-time champ.
