In an incredible journey where agony was mixed with ecstasy, Aman Sehrawat has emerged as one of the brightest stars of India on the world stage of wrestling. Now 21, Sehrawat bagged a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, and his tale is neither confined to the circumference of the wrestling mat nor to just another weary story of determination in the face of considerable personal tragedy; rather, this tale at just a tender age is a testament to something else.
Life had become utterly cruel and heart-wrenching for eleven-year-old Aman. In one year, he lost his mother to depression and then his father, who gave up on life soon after losing his wife. Now an orphan, life had just turned uncertain for Aman, where there was no clear path that lay ahead. But never before had the easily despairing life been the point to commence telling a story of transformation and victory.
Out of his defeat rose another family: the wrestling community. His uncle took him under his wing and shortly after, he was admitted into Delhi’s prestigious Chhatrasal Wrestling Academy, the crucible for Indian wrestling talent that has furnished Olympic greats such as Sushil Kumar and Bajrang Punia. It is this place that had latent potential shine in Aman.
Aman’s travel to the Olympic podium was anything but easy. The eve of the bronze-medal match at the all-important Paris meet had him facing a big challenge: he was almost 1.5 kg over his competition weight. In a sport where every gram makes a difference, this contested his chances. With the struggles of fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat in the recent past still fresh in everyone’s minds, Aman’s coaches knew they had to act fast.
Aman underwent a strenuous late-night regime, coupled with early-morning gym schedules, at the discretion of coach Virender Dahiya and the supportive team, to ensure he arrived at the weight. At 4:15 that morning, Aman had made his mark, while at 7:15, he had the weighing in. The grueling efforts set the stage for his bronze-medal match later that day.
But in his last but one match against Puerto Rico’s Toi Darian Cruz, Aman began on a very tentative note. Once settled, his much superior strength, speed, and relentless offensive onslaught proved too much for Cruz to handle. He won 13-5 to clinch the bronze medal as he wrote his name in the Olympic history for India.
More than anything else, this victory was personal for Aman. “This medal is for my parents,” he said, his voice filled with both pride and sorrow. His parents never lived to see their son become an Olympian, and this medal was his way of remembering them.
Wrestling was not a dream that Aman carried from childhood but a desperation to fall back on something after being orphaned; something he could attach himself to for the sake of his identity. At Chhatrasal, he found just the thing he found within the four walls of the academy—a purpose. The grueling training regime at Chhatrasal designed to produce champions became the new way of life for Aman.
Nothing was special in that thin, weak boy who came to the coaches at Chhatrasal. But then came an unrelenting determination in Aman, which set him apart. He poured himself into the sport so intensely, it soon started showing. In 2018, finally, Aman managed a bronze at the World Cadet Championships, and it marked the beginning of a surefire rise in the sport of wrestling. By 2022, he had added the Under-23 Asian and World Championship titles in his favor to have created history.
Of course, triumph in Paris is merely the beginning of what will no doubt be a decorated career. Although having set his ambition for gold, the bronze medal will serve as fertile ground for further achievements. And, aiming further—in his sights the next Olympic Games to which he will compete in Los Angeles in 2028—Aman Sehrawat will come back stronger and go higher in his ascent. After all, he wants to match or exceed the count that his idol, Sushil Kumar, had won with two Olympic medals in years to come.
Aman Sehrawat, from an orphan to an Olympian, if there ever was a resilient and hopeful story, this is that of the human spirit. His bronze medal means more than an accolade—it’s a tribute to his dead parents, a testament to an inner unbreakable strength, an oath for greater things in times to come. Aman continues to inspire several who dream of rising above the adversities in life and making it big with one’s gut in the world of wrestling.
