  1. Operation Sindoor: India Strikes Back, Destroys Nine Terror Camps in Pakistan and PoK as Retaliation for Pahalgam Massacre ( Operation Sindoor )

In an emphatic and decisive counter-attack called “Operation Sindoor,” the Indian military has attacked nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and sent out a firm message to terror outfits and their patrons. This measured military retaliation follows only two weeks after the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that left 26 civilians, including one Nepali citizen, dead.

The attacks, carried out in the wee hours of Wednesday, were termed by the Ministry of Defence as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory”, hitting terrorist infrastructure without targeting Pakistani military facilities. The Indian retaliation was designed with care and restraint, the official statement said, and was targeted at those who were supporting and facilitating cross-border terrorism.

“Together, nine (9) locations have been targeted… India has shown a lot of restraint in choice of targets and modus operandi,” said the Ministry. The strike was traced directly to India’s pledge of revenge over the Pahalgam carnage, for which The Resistance Front (TRF)—Lashkar-e-Taiba proxy group—claimed responsibility.

After the strikes, the Indian Army put up a brief but forceful message on X (formerly Twitter): “Justice is served. Jai Hind!” The slogan soon went viral, echoing the country’s seething rage and pride in the military’s action.

What Was Targeted?

Though the government hasn’t come out with the details, the Pakistani military confirmed the strikes. Pakistan Army spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry confirmed that Indian missiles hit areas in Kotli and Muzaffarabad (PoK) and Bahawalpur in Punjab province.

Chaudhry denounced the move and issued a warning in strong words: “Let me say it categorically: Pakistan will respond to this at a time and place of its own choosing. This heinous provocation will not pass unpunished.”

In the meantime, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif responded in strong words, terming India’s action as an “act of war” and held an emergency meeting with senior military and security leaders.

Leaders Applaud the Response

In India, party leaders from both sides showed unequivocal support to the armed forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, taking to X, tweeted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” in honour of the operation. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and other top ministers reiterated the same sentiment, saying India will no longer accept terror from the other side.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in previous statements after the Pahalgam attack, had vowed that India would “chase the terrorists to the ends of the earth.” Operation Sindoor appears to be the first tangible step in keeping that promise.

A Turning Point in India’s Anti-Terror Doctrine?

The raw scope and choreography of Operation Sindoor betray a fresh pivot in India’s anti-terror approach—one where aggressive, prompt counter-attack and cautious deferral of full-blown war against the Pakistani armed forces dominate strategy.

An extended briefing on the operation is imminent later today that might shed greater light on planning and conduct of this cross-border action. As it stands now, the message is unambiguously one: India would no longer watch helplessly while being attacked by terrorists.

  1. India Readies for Countrywide Civil Defence Exercises with Crash Blackouts ( blackout)

India is preparing for a large-scale civil defence exercise on May 7, 2025, as ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), with a view to adopting “crash blackout measures” in 244 identified districts. This strategic exercise, the largest since the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict, is a reaction to mounting tensions after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. One of the main elements, the crash blackout, is an instant switch-off of lights and visible infrastructure to conceal possible targets during aerial attacks, a strategy detailed in India’s 2003 General Principles of Civil Defence. The guide requires no light to be observable from 5,000 feet above the ground level during regular times, with the streetlights reduced to minimum wattage and buildings shielded to avoid outside light leakage. The directive by the MHA focuses on readiness against contemporary threats, such as limitations on lighted advertisements and auto lights in susceptible zones. As cross-border firing by Pakistan goes on, the exercises are meant to prepare civilians, ring out air raid sirens, and practice evacuation procedures, displaying India’s determination to strengthen national security.

  1. YES Bank Shares Jump on Stake Buyout Talks with Japan’s SMBC ( sumitomo mitsui yes bank)

Yes Bank shares jumped more than 9% intraday on May 6, 2025, after reports said Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp (SMBC) is engaging in talks to buy a majority stake in State Bank of India (SBI)-owned lender Mumbai-based bank with the bank. While later the shares fixed at a gain of 1.5% and closed at ₹17.98 on NSE, there was a remarkable market interest the news generated. Sources informed Moneycontrol that SMBC may take up to 51% of YES Bank, with SBI, which has a 23.97% stake, possibly selling 20%. The transaction would open the door for SBI and other lenders, such as Axis Bank and HDFC Bank, which saved YES Bank in its 2020 liquidity crisis, to sell their stakes. YES Bank clarified that talks are at a preliminary and speculative stage and denied reports of RBI approval. The possible acquisition represents a tactical turn for YES Bank, seeking to fortify its financial position while granting its rescuers an exit strategy, in continued attempts to maximize shareholder value.

  1. Canada’s Carney Rejects Trump’s Statehood Pitch in White House Talks ( Canada not for sale Trump)

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a stern rebuff to US President Donald Trump on May 6, 2025, stating that Canada is “not for sale” and will never be the 51st US state. Replying to Trump’s inflammatory Truth Social post during the White House press briefing, Carney disputed the US subsidy payments to Canada and rejected Canada’s requirement of bilateral relations. Trump’s past threats, from aggressive tariffs and annexation speech to a worsening border crisis, strained a four-decade friendship crucial to vehicle manufacturing and fuel supplies. Appearing on an NBC interview, Trump referred to the border as an “artificial line” to spark more fury that secured Carney’s Liberal Party’s electoral win. Tense White House encounter underlined issues of dealing with US relations, with Carney reiterating Canada’s sovereignty. Trump’s confrontational approach, including a $200 billion claim for subsidy, has created international apprehensions regarding disruption in trade, putting the strength of North American diplomatic relationships to the test.
