A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal close to the Nepal-Tibet border early Tuesday morning, with tremors reverberating through Delhi-NCR and other parts of northern India, including Bihar.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake hit at 6:35 AM, some 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Glacier. Emergency teams in Nepal and India have been put on high alert, though as yet, there are no immediate reports of damage.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, NCS, the quake had its epicenter at a depth of 10 km. Two aftershocks measuring 4.7 and 4.9 on the Richter scale followed within minutes, further shaking the area. Nepal, situated in an active seismic region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, is often hit by high-intensity tremors.
Officials have urged people to remain calm and alert for aftershocks, stressing readiness during this critical time.
Frustrated investors gathered outside Torres Jewellery’s Dadar office in Mumbai, demanding refunds after the company failed to honor promised returns on its investment schemes.
The crowd grew in size as investors, who had invested large sums of money in schemes promising a 10% return a week, accused the company of having stopped the payments two weeks ago. Torres Jewellery has been making timely payments since it initiated the scheme last year; however, its sudden discontinuation has enraged people.
In a social media statement, Torres blamed its CEO, Tausif Reyaz, for orchestrating fraudulent activities. Police have registered complaints and are investigating the alleged scam. Investors are now demanding their principal amounts be returned immediately.
