In their last march to reclaim undecided swing states, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making their final appeals. This could ultimately decide whether Harris will become the first female president on November 5, 2024, or grant Trump his historic return to the White House.
Polls in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, holding 19 pivotal electoral votes, indicate a decisive reversal. Polling stations there will be open from 7 a.m. (5:35 p.m. IST) to 8 p.m. (6:30 a.m. IST). Early results should start trickling in shortly after 6 p.m. (4:30 a.m. IST), thus offering some perspective on whether Harris or Trump will scrape up the 270 Electoral College votes for a victory.
Political analysts, such as Mark Halperin from Newsmax, expect trouble for Harris in Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia. Losing Wisconsin could seriously jeopardize her chances, notwithstanding her likely Pennsylvania capture. A recent Washington Post poll showed both candidates hitting the 47% mark among registered voters in a dead heat. Data tracker FiveThirtyEight gave Harris a slight edge, although it exists within the margin of error, showing that there was much unpredictability going forward.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is preparing Jio Platforms Limited for one of India’s biggest IPOs so far. This will be done in 2025, and keen interest is expected as it goes beyond what was raised so far by others. As advised, investment bankers have not been retained yet, although the preparatory steps have started here.
Analysts estimate Jio Platforms’ valuations at greater than $100 billion, but RIL hasn’t settled on anything internally. In July, Jefferies penned a valuation in anticipation of an IPO of $112 billion. Unlike the latter, which was demerged, Jio Platforms would come into the fray as a subsidiary format.
Jio Platforms’ telecom arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, had a customer base of over 479 million, providing a range of voice and data services at competitive prices. The company disrupted the telecom market by rolling out free voice services and cheap data plans in 2016, making the market to be among the cheapest in the world for data costs. Partnerships are another bright feather on the company’s hat, its most stunning example being the recent partnership with Nvidia for AI data centers. The IPO of RIL’s retail business is, however, expected to take a backseat since it is still pending the latter’s operational objectives.
Helena Luke, known for her brief marriage to Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty and her roles in Bollywood films such as Mard, has died in the United States. Her friend Kalapana Iyer informed the media of her death. For four months, Luke was the wife of Mithun Chakraborty, after which he married actress Yogita Bali.
Her very last post on Facebook flowed with concerns for her friends after she mentioned that she felt “weird” and “discombobulated.” The cause of her death is unclear, but her perplexing final message led friends to abundance for her mental state. One friend wrote, “We will miss you so much, you bubbly girl. Why did you not call for the ambulance last night?” Others echoed feelings of regret and disbelief.
Her death exposes the fragile life and reminds all her fans of a superstar who faded away from the public eye, but would still be cherished by those who knew her.
Music industry magnate Quincy Jones passed away at 91. He made the odd revelation: he dated Ivanka Trump in 2006 when she was 25 and he was 72. This surprising remark, which he had made in one 2018 interview with Vulture, took most people aback. He explicitly talked about this happening; apparently, fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger placed the phone call to set it up; he found Ivanka “beautiful,” but added, “Wrong father, though.”
Jones was also forthright about his feelings toward Donald Trump, whom he described as “mentally limited” and “narcissistic.” His gutsy reflections on his life and career have once again come forth into the fore following his death, generating new conversations about his legacy and unbridled honesty.
The Diwali releases of Hindi films have, for long, been synonymous with the word blockbuster. This trend was suddenly shattered by the movie, Thugs of Hindostan in 2018. Despite a constellation of stars comprising Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Katrina Kaif, this film failed to meet even a fraction of its huge budget of ₹300 crore. The opening day collection was fixed at ₹52 crores and, however, the film did die a death, thanks to scathing reviews that were equally damning through the grapevine.
By its fourth day of being out, it had settled at a mere ₹6 crore per day, and in another few days, cinema halls across the country reported crickets, and the attrition began to take its toll. The distributors even called up Yash Raj Films for a complete refund of the losses they had incurred. Since Aamir Khan has always been popular with many successful films, he took the failure to heart and publicly apologized for not meeting the expectations of the audience. He commented on this in year 2019, saying, “I felt emotionally that I should address it and apologize to people for not living up to the expectations.”
Algerian boxing champion Imane Khelif, who secured gold in women’s boxing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is embroiled in controversy after a leaked medical report questioned her gender classification. The report, compiled by experts from hospitals in Paris and Algiers, revealed that Khelif has XY chromosomes and internal testicles, a condition known as 5-alpha reductase deficiency.
This is not the first time Khelif’s gender has come under scrutiny; she was banned from the 2023 World Championship final in New Delhi for similar reasons. The revelation has reignited debates on gender policies in sports, sparking discussions on fairness and inclusion.
Bella Bradford, a 24-year-old Australian TikToker, died fighting a rare jaw cancer, called rhabdomyosarcoma. In what was probably her final act of courage, Bradford filmed a “Get Ready With Me” video that instigated a huge lump in the throats of many people who considered her a brave princess of the social media domain. Her closing line was a punch to the heart of every viewer-“You live every day, and only once die, so make every day count.”
Bradford’s bereavement drew thousands of comments from her fans, revering her for strength and positivity. She asked that gifts be made in her name to establish cancer research organizations, such as Rare Cancers Australia and Head and Neck Cancer Australia, cementing her legacy as a fighter and an advocate.
The clash at the box office over Diwali between Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was fierce, with both films putting in great performance on the earning front. On Day 4 itself, both movies earned ₹17.5 crore each, reflecting a stable interest level.
*Ajay Devgn’s Singham Again scored approximately ₹139.25 crore domestic earnings in the four days, whereas Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and its lead actor Kartik Aaryan were able to garner ₹123.50 crore for the same four days. The film only consolidated this victory with overseas collections, taking the total worldwide untouchable to ₹186 crore for Devgn and ₹163.20 crore for the comedy presented by Aaryan. Such a head-on collision secures an extraordinary amount of appeal for action-cum-comedy in Indian cinema.
India’s vibrant chances to make a comeback in the forthcoming Test series against Australia suffered a big blow because the pace bowler Mohammed Shami was not in the squad named for Bengal for the upcoming Ranji Trophy matches. This raises serious doubts over the probability of his playing in the vital Border-Gavaskar Test series, for which India is striving to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
Shami’s presence could, without any doubt, have given a much-needed boost to a bowling lot, already under scrutiny coming with a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand not long ago. The onus is now burdened on coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma to search for alternatives that could prove worthwhile. The absence of Shami highlights the challenges that the team is under with respect to assembling a competitive pace attack, the condition of Mohammed Siraj not making matters any better.
Neymar’s much-vaunted return to football crashed with an injury sustained after he was forced off the pitch during Al Hilal’s 3-0 win in the Asian Champions League. Since he had just recast after the ACL tear, Neymar, made his second appearance for Al Hilal against the Asian Champions League opponent back in the showbiz but was regrettably cut short because he appeared to have developed some sort of strain in his right leg while attempting a play in the penalty area.
Since joining Al Hilal in 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar’s return has been monitored closely, which has meant that the club has been cautious about rushing him back. He debuted with Al Hilal on October 21, 2023, but will remain sidelined from apparehanging in Saudi Pro League games until January due to registration rules. In stressing the importance of full fitness before he can turn out for the national team, Brazil’s national team has officially dropped Neymar from the squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
