Biggest Story In India Headlines 4th March 2025
Renowned Mumbai cricketer Padmakar Shivalkar, one of the finest left-arm spinners never to play for India, passed away on March 3 at the age of 84. Despite an illustrious domestic career spanning two decades, Shivalkar never made it to the Indian national team due to the dominance of Bishan Singh Bedi during his era.
Shivalkar represented Mumbai from 1961 to 1988 in first-class cricket and collected a huge 589 wickets in 124 games. His finest show was in the 1972-73 final of the Ranji Trophy vs Tamil Nadu when he took 8 for 16 and 5 for 18 to get Mumbai their 15th in a row title.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, who featured Shivalkar in his book Idols, expressed deep regret over his passing. “One of my biggest regrets as India captain was not being able to convince the selectors to include him in the Test team. He deserved the India cap far more than some others who got it,” Gavaskar stated.
Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik also paid tribute, calling Shivalkar’s contributions to Mumbai cricket “unparalleled” and describing his passing as an “irreplaceable loss.”
The vote counting in the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana started on 3rd March. Security is enhanced at counting centers, where entry is banned for unauthorized officials without identity cards.
In Telangana, the polls were conducted in graduate constituency of Medak-Nizamabad-Adilabad-Karimnagar and teacher constituencies of Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda. In Andhra Pradesh, however, voting was conducted for three seats of MLC, including graduate seats in the Godavari and Krishna-Guntur and a teacher MLC seat encompassing Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam.
Returning officers in the two states stressed following procedures to guarantee a clean counting process. Special ballot boxes and CCTV monitoring have been used to forestall any irregularities. Counting began at 8 AM, and outcomes are anticipated later in the day.
The U.S. stock market plummeted sharply after President Donald Trump reaffirmed that a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports would be imposed from Tuesday. The S&P 500 posted the biggest single-day loss since December, while the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso also fell to one-month lows.
Market observers said U.S. factory data, which indicated steady output but increasing factory costs, further fueled investor worries. The rise in raw material costs and supply chain disruptions will further strain production, compounding the impact of the new tariffs.
European markets, however, remained resilient as the euro firmed after European leaders agreed to draw up a Ukraine peace plan.
Google has started to disable legacy versions of the uBlock Origin ad blocker for users of Chrome, in its migration to the new extension format, Manifest V3. Although Google says this will improve security and privacy, the update also eliminates a major feature ad blockers depend upon, restricting how well they work.
Users have reported the receipt of notification in Chrome instructing them to uninstall outdated extensions, with minimal options available, including the ability to delete the extension or alter settings. Phaseout, implemented in October, has picked up speed over recent weeks and currently impacts a sizeable number of users.
Mozilla, the developer of Firefox, has declined to follow Google’s lead and will keep supporting the older Manifest V2 extensions, offering a fallback for users dissatisfied with the changes.
A huge leak of Avengers: Doomsday made headlines on the internet after a Marvel artist leaked concept art showing the movie’s plot and cast. Though leaks usually call for violent takedown responses, Disney has surprisingly opted against quashing the images.
The leaked material reveals a Battleworld world governed by God Emperor Doom, a medieval-themed universe populated with a variety of Marvel characters. The fans have been supportive of the idea, with most people excited about the direction the movie is headed.
Disney seems to have accepted the leak, aware that the enormous buzz about it only adds to anticipation for the film. Instead of making copyright accusations, the studio is riding the hype as gratis promotion.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered Minister Dhananjay Munde to resign in the wake of increasing controversy surrounding the Massajog village murder case. Although Munde is not named directly, one of the principal accused, Valmik Karad, is said to be a close acquaintance of the minister.
Political pressure grew following a statement from Ramdas Athawale, an NDA ally, that Karad’s participation in his past criminal ventures raised ethical questions. He asked Munde to quit on moral grounds, insisting that public servants should keep their distance from individuals facing criminal charges.
Munde will tender his resignation on Tuesday, a big political development in Maharashtra.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world’s top AI chip manufacturer, unveiled a $100 billion investment in expanding its presence in the U.S. This action is a response to President Donald Trump’s efforts to fortify local semiconductor manufacturing.
At a White House ceremony, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei reaffirmed that the company will expand its presence in the U.S. to five high-end manufacturing facilities. Trump welcomed the investment as a move toward protecting American dominance of AI chip production, describing it as a “game-changer for technological supremacy.”
The investment follows TSMC’s current $65 billion investment in the U.S. and is predicted to create thousands of high-tech employment opportunities.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese football sensation, did not make the trip to Tehran with Al-Nassr for their AFC Champions League last-16 clash against Esteghlal. The club claimed previous security reasons as the justification for his non-appearance and even asked the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to relocate the fixture to a neutral ground, only for their plea to be turned down.
Meanwhile, while Ronaldo remained behind, major players like Sadio Mane, Jhon Duran, and Marcelo Brozovic have made their way to Iran for the pivotal game. Al-Nassr supporters still hope that the team will do well even without Ronaldo.
After being beaten 0-3 by NorthEast United, Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle conceded that weak recruitment of players really affected the performance of the team this season.
NorthEast United’s Alaaeddine Ajaraie was the star of the show with a goal and two assists as his side qualified for the knockouts for the first time since 2021. Coyle bemoaned the lack of a game-changer playmaker like Rafael Crivellaro, who had been the key in the past seasons.
As Chennaiyin FC did not make an impact, Coyle stressed the importance of improved scouting and signings before the next season.
Ahead of India’s Champions Trophy semifinal match against Australia, former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has identified Travis Head as the biggest threat.
Head, who scored a match-winning knock against India in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, has been an ever-reliable performer in big-pressure games. Australia not having their front-line pacers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc might give India an upper hand, but Manjrekar is of the opinion that getting rid of Head early will prove to be a decisive factor.
“Get Travis Head out early—that’s the turning point for me,” Manjrekar said, highlighting the need to nullify Australia’s in-form opener.
With the semifinal being a high-pressure game, everyone will be watching how India handles Head’s attacking batting.
