Former child star Michelle Trachtenberg, best known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, was found dead at the age of 39 in her New York apartment. Trachtenberg, who gained popularity with the 1996 movie Harriet the Spy, was found lifeless in her upscale apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan, after a 911 call was made in the early morning hours. The New York Police Department (NYPD) answered the distress call around 8:00 AM and discovered the actress unconscious and unresponsive. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene, and initial reports suggest no foul play. The authorities have opened an inquiry, and the New York Medical Examiner’s Office is currently identifying the reason for her death. Fans and members of the entertainment industry have been shocked and saddened by her untimely death.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 hit Assam’s Morigaon district at dawn on Thursday, triggering tremors in Guwahati and the surrounding areas. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said that the quake happened at 2:25 AM at a depth of 16 kilometers. Assam, part of Seismic Zone V, has been susceptible to earthquakes in the past with major tremors having occurred in 1950 (magnitude 8.6) and 1897 (magnitude 8.1). Although no casualties or significant damage have been reported, people were frightened, and some had fled their homes out of precaution. This earthquake follows just days from a 5.1-magnitude tremor in the Bay of Bengal affecting Odisha and West Bengal.

  1. Slack Experiences Huge Outage, Thousands of Users Disrupted Globally

Communication titan Slack experienced a huge outage on Wednesday, disrupting business operations for thousands of users worldwide. The technical dashboard of the platform initially reported the problem at 9:57 PM IST, with users unable to send messages, access workflows, and log in. Downdetector reports showed more than 3,000 reports of outages, with users complaining about delayed communications and halted projects. Slack confirmed the problem on its status page, saying that it was attempting to restore functionality as soon as possible. But no time estimate for a solution has been offered. Entrepreneurs and professionals who have largely depended on Slack for workflow and collaboration expressed discontent on social media.

  1. Capgemini India CEO Ashwin Yardi Proposes 47.5-Hour Work Week

In the meanwhile, as the global work culture discussion continues to spark controversy, Capgemini India CEO Ashwin Yardi joined the bandwagon, suggesting a 47.5-hour work week and urging organizations to give employees space over the weekend. Addressing the Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum (NTLF), Yardi said his motto is not to send emails on weekends unless there are pressing issues. His remarks follow recent debate on longer working hours, initiated by Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who had suggested a 70-hour work week, and L&T Chairman S N Subrahmanyan, who had suggested an even more radical 90-hour work week. Yardi highlighted that though hard work is important, firms must emphasize employee well-being and aim for performance results over long hours.

There’s been a political storm after a professor who had earlier glorified Nathuram Godse was appointed a dean at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut. The professor, Dr. Andavan, was accused of controversial statements on social media in 2024 in which she expressed that she was “proud of Godse for saving India.” She was booked under IPC Section 153 for instigating communal tensions after public uproar and then released on bail. Her new promotion has generated severe opposition from the Congress party, with the district president, K. Praveenkumar, promising to organize protests near the NIT campus. The institution is yet to come out with an official statement on the controversy.

  1. Miranda House Initiates Legal Action Against Ziddi Girls Web Series for Defamatory Trailer

Miranda House of Delhi issued a legal notice to the producers of the web series Ziddi Girls, calling for the trailer to be withdrawn after it apparently made defamatory remarks against the institution. The teaser had a voice-over that went, “Aaj MH mein padhai nahi, porn chalta hai,” which instigated outrage amongst students, alumni, and academics. Even when the producers subsequently released a second teaser with a disclaimer, the original video can still be accessed online, thus necessitating action in court. The college officials have also made a police complaint, alleging distortion of the institute.

Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran produced a record-breaking effort in the ICC Champions Trophy, hitting 177 runs from 146 balls against England. His 12 boundary and six-six hit innings is now the individual Champions Trophy high score, passing Kapil Dev’s 175 (1983) and Sourav Ganguly’s 183 (1999). This effort also makes him the top Afghan scorer in ODIs, replacing his own 162 against Sri Lanka in 2022.
