Biggest Story In India Headlines 26th February 2025
A Delhi Court on February 25, 2025, sentenced former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment for the killing of a Sikh man and his son during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This is more than 40 years since the gruesome events, and Kumar has another conviction on his record as he already serves a life term for a different case concerning the riots.
The verdict was delivered after years of legal battles, with the court finding Kumar guilty of instigating mob violence against Sikhs in Delhi. The case was centered on the brutal killing of Jaswant Singh and his son on November 1, 1984, in the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
While Sikh leaders welcomed the court’s decision, many, including the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), expressed disappointment that Kumar was not given the death penalty. Some community leaders vowed to appeal for a harsher sentence, insisting that justice was still incomplete.
Fashion giant Zara has shut down its iconic store in South Mumbai’s Fort area, leaving many in disbelief—not because of declining sales but due to its staggering ₹3 crore monthly rent.
Launched in 2017, the store was Zara’s sixth in Mumbai and 20th in India. The brand initially rented the building for 21 years at a rent of ₹2.25 crore a month, which was raised by 5% every year. With time, the rent swelled to ₹3.01 crore a month, making it one of the costliest retail premises in India.
Most social media users responded with amazement. Some wondered whether profitability was simply impossible with rents that high, and others opined that desirable locations are not really a profitable location but more of a statement of brand value. Zara still has numerous stores in Mumbai, even though the one above mentioned closed.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will join Isha Yoga Center’s Maha Shivaratri festivities in Coimbatore, after the invitation from spiritual guru Sadhguru.
Addressing social media, Shivakumar was enthused about tasting the spiritual flavour of the evening-long celebration attended by thousands including celebrities and bureaucrats. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also reportedly be joining the grand celebration.
With Pope Francis fighting acute health issues, such as pneumonia and kidney inadequacy, rumors have reached a fever pitch over a century-old prediction by Nostradamus that purportedly foretold the demise of a weak pontiff.
Based on Nostradamus’ text in his 1555 book Les Prophéties, he wrote that “Through the death of a very old Pontiff… a Roman of good age will be elected.” Some experts interpret this as predicting Pope Francis’ near-death and the emergence of a new leader in the Vatican.
While no official release has been made on the state of the Pope’s health, most in the Catholic faith community are worried that his health is failing. Cardinal Timothy Dolan said the world is “at the bedside of a dying father.”
In a move that is being heavily criticized, Donald Trump, the former President of the U.S., has suggested a ‘Gold Card’ for immigrants, which is a premium version of the Green Card that can be purchased for $5 million.
Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump said it was a “fast-track route to citizenship for rich people”, adding that the program would target high-net-worth immigrants who have the ability to make meaningful contributions to the U.S. economy.
Though backers have praised the plan as a visionary economic stimulus, opponents contend that it grants an unfair advantage to the wealthy at the expense of millions of industrious immigrants fighting for legal status. The details of implementation are uncertain, and lawyers expect it to meet with fierce resistance in Congress.
Marvel enthusiasts have something huge to anticipate, as directors Joe and Anthony Russo have announced that they will shoot Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars consecutively.
The Russo Brothers—known for directing Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame—disclosed that both films will be shot consecutively in London. While noting the enormous task, they seemed thrilled, adding that the films will be more ambitious than Marvel has ever been.
With Marvel Studios having a difficult time regaining its former box-office dominance, most expect these movies to play a pivotal role in reviving fan interest.
Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo added another feather to his cap, scoring his 925th professional goal in Al-Nassr’s 2-0 win over Al-Wehda in the Saudi Pro League.
After the game, the 40-year-old legend went on Instagram, posting pictures and captioning “Keep going!”, inspiring his teammates as they close the points gap with league leaders Al-Ittihad.
Ronaldo, who is on the hunt for 1,000 career goals, is still one of the most dominant players in world football, even at 40.
Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez created history by scoring one of the quickest goals in Copa del Rey history, scoring within 43 seconds against Barcelona.
The goal arrived when Antoine Griezmann’s corner took a slight deflection, enabling Alvarez to slide it home with ease. This was his 20th goal for Atletico Madrid since he moved from Manchester City, further cementing his status as one of the top strikers in Europe.
England skipper Jos Buttler recently made news with a quiet shot at India, asking why they get to host all their Champions Trophy games in Dubai, whereas other teams have to travel the length and breadth of Pakistan and the UAE.
While Buttler played down the concern, claiming he’s “not too worried about it”, former England captains Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain have highlighted the obvious benefit India enjoys by playing in one stable venue.
India had declined to travel to Pakistan over security fears, and a hybrid tournament format was agreed, where all Indian games are hosted in Dubai.
Cricket great Sachin Tendulkar, aged 51, rewound the years with a blistering innings in the International Masters League, providing the Navi Mumbai crowd with goosebumps.
Playing in a 133-run chase, Tendulkar hit three back-to-back boundaries and a huge six over square leg, scoring a flamboyant 34 from 21 balls. His red-hot stroke play took fans down the memory lane to his golden years, sending the stadium into a frenzy of ‘Sachin, Sachin’ chants.
With 36,000 fans at the stadium, the energy was charged, something that confirmed Sachin Tendulkar is still the ‘God of Cricket’ even several years since his retirement.
