Indian chess sensation D Gukesh is all set to make history as he battles reigning champion Ding Liren for the title of undisputed world chess champion. The game, which begins from Monday in Singapore, pits an in-form 18-year-old Gukesh against Ding, who at 32, has notched no wins over the past 300 days of classical games, leaving onlookers questioning the womanizer’s preparedness for this tussle.
Gukesh, already the youngest winner of the Candidates Tournament at 17, symbolizes a new era for Indian chess. It is the first time since the reign of the great Viswanathan Anand that an Indian has achieved this level. Interestingly, Anand last contested the title in 2013.
While Gukesh is a world rank of fifth, Ding is ranked a surprising 23rd, a record for the lowest rank of a defending champion in modern chess history. In the absence of Magnus Carlsen from the championship scene after reigning close to a decade without defeat, the just concluded clash will give definition to a new chapter in the sport.
