Seasoned actor Akhilendra Mishra has joined the recent chorus of protest by actor Rajit Kapur against the financial exploitation of character actors by Bollywood producers. Mishra, with experience in Indian films, said that this problem lingers on with producers who go on proving one cannot pay a bit less than what was deserved by actors, who are not stars but veterans. He averred that the gap now widens between decision-makers and veterans in a corporate culture that dominates Bollywood.
“Producers only seem to value the stars. Character artists often struggle, and if they were to face medical emergencies, they would not have the means to cover their expenses,” said Mishra, who thinks that more financial support for the industry on the side of non-star actors is basically absent. What must make Bollywood wince is that there is no royalty system here, especially considering that even Hollywood makes its smallest contributors on set recipients of royalties.
Seriously damaging the reputation of the industry at large,” says Mishra. He fears he may become a target for speaking out against such practices but remains committed to raising awareness about the need for financial reforms in the entertainment industry.
Omar Abdullah is to be sworn in as the Union Territory’s first chief minister, however news reports say that the Congress party would not be part of the Abdullah ministry. Instead, the party would give outside support to Abdullah’s government.
The swearing-in ceremony would be scheduled for the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre. The day of the swearing-in would indeed be a momentous one with the forming of the first government of the Union Territory. Abdullah, who had held office as chief minister from 2009 to 2014 under the National Conference-Congress coalition, has the support of 42 MLAs from the National Conference besides a score of independents, Congress legislators and one CPI(M) representative.
This political move signals the evolution happening in the region, especially since the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory. Though the Congress is still to be inducted into the cabinet, it will form the crucial support that will help this new government gain stability.
A very popular streamer, Zack Hoyt, aka Asmongold, has been temporarily banned from Twitch for some horrific and incendiary remarks he made about Palestinians while live streaming. The streamer, who typically focuses on his gaming content, “stepped out of the bubble” into political commentary in question, referring to Palestinians as “terrible people” and complaining about their culture. It was in reference to the conflict that has raged between Israelis and Palestinians for what feels like an eternity, and sparked outrage across social media.
It was a sharp backlash Asmongold’s remarks brewed, with many saying he should be tossed off the platform. Twitch responded by banning his ‘Zackrawrr’ account, although his main account remains active and has not been used for nearly a year. The firm said that such content violates community guidelines as hate speech.
This latest incident has reignited debates on public figures’ responsibilities-especially from such key platforms as Twitch to desist from verbal poison.
Delhi University or DU would withdraw a controversial circular issued in the day that aimed at bringing professors and associate professors’ work hours similar to assistant professors, claiming the move was under the Career Advancement Scheme or CAS. However, the move met severe criticisms from teaching staff of the university.
Currently, under UGC norms, the senior faculty works a 14-hour week and junior faculty a 16-hour week. The proposal to hike work load was objected to by professors who took to social networking media with distress messages. Critics did not like the administration’s efforts at trying to fill staffing positions with the increase of workload and not hiring more faculty members.
The backlash from the circular led DU to withdraw it later in the day with a statement that the institute would issue more clarification statements at a later date.
Six Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, are to leave India by October 19 as diplomatic relations between India and Canada have crossed a boiling point. Their departure will leave India with nine diplomats in Canada, while Canada will retain 15 diplomats in India after another round of expulsions.
These diplomatic maneuvres have followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s accusations and innuendos of Indian involvement in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. However, Indian officials have outrightly dismissed these accusations, with no evidence provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) to support the allegations levelled by Trudeau.
As tensions have continued to escalate, it is indeed believed that Trudeau might use these accusations to win over very important voter bases before pending elections and further dampen and strain the relations between the two nations.
But Canada’s New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh was dealt embarrassment when reporters burst into laughter while reiterating the former’s statement to impose sanctions on India. Singh, vocal proponent of Khalistan movement, had been pushing for economic and political sanctions against India amidst growing tensions between the two countries over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
At one point, when the reporters asked him for a comment on the economic implications of such measures, Singh had attempted to clarify that it was only being done to restriction in access to diplomats, not to impose any political or other broader economic measures. Reporters burst into laughter, and Singh stormed out of the press conference. The meeting room was left to the cackles of reporters as it ended suddenly.
This is worth a perusal, since it mirrors the increasing tensions between Singh’s political rhetoric and the practical realities of Canada’s relationship with India, especially as the diplomatic dispute intensifies.
Samsung India yesterday concluded a month-long protest by workers at its plant near Chennai over pay and working conditions after an agreement with management on several welfare measures. Hundreds of employees had been on strike since early September, bringing to a standstill consumer electronics production in this factory.
Tamil Nadu State minister T.R.B Rajaa confirmed that the state minister said the strike was officially over, and everybody returns to work. Samsung assured that no disciplinary action will be taken against those who led and involved themselves in the strike. “We made commitments to the employees that we will not be taking action against the employees who engaged in the strike. The management is also to be committed in close working with the employees to improve the conditions of the plant.”.
Specifically, this resolution will allow Samsung to maintain its volume of production and cater to a rapidly expanding consumer base in India-called its key market.
AI powerhouse OpenAI is adding former Palantir CISO Dane Stuckey to its newly appointed co-CISO role in addition to Matt Knight, who was recently elevated to the role following the departure of the company’s former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati.
Stuckey is a thought leader who is well respected, and his most critical endorsement has to be on secure controls. OpenAI continues to attain edge technologies in AI that remain cutting-edge, yet Stuckey seems to stress that it needs more robust security protocols. According to the CEO, Altman, “Sam praised Stuckey’s expertise, stating that his leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the safe advancement of OpenAI’s mission.”.
This shift in leadership has also arrived at a highly important time for OpenAI. As the company continuously pushes the frontiers of AI and tries to navigate its natural complexities at the same time, an ongoing threat to cybersecurity joins the ever-growing list.
Dutch hockey coach Paul van Ass, who has come back to India to coach the UP Rudras in the Hockey India League (HIL) now, has expressed concern over the lack of competitive games for the Indian women’s hockey team. Van Ass, who has coached the Dutch women’s team to gold at the Paris Olympics, claimed European teams played dozens of high-level matches during the season, but the Indian teams had far fewer matches.
For Van Ass, the revival of HIL is more to the credit of Indian players because there will be an opportunity to face many top international players, which will help the Indian players to do well and build their confidence. The coach with years of experience in Indian hockey hoped that HIL would raise the standards of both men’s and women’s hockey and bring in a competitive element.
Bollywood is in a mourning mood as the much-loved actor Atul Parchure died of cancer at the age of 57. He was very popular for his cinematic performances in Marathi cinema and well-known television shows such as Comedy Nights and The Kapil Sharma Show.
Some close colleagues of Parchure – including co-stars Archana Puran Singh and Krushna Abhishek – have shared heartfelt tributes, calling him one of the most talented actors of his time, while others highlighted his kind heart. Archana Puran Singh remembered his return to The Kapil Sharma Show after his illness and at the same time voiced appreciation over the positive attitude he has remained with at a time when his health had gone completely sour.
The death of Parchure has resulted in a personal loss to the industry, and several reflected on his contributions and the laughter he gave them over his three-decade-long career.
