The Election Commission of India is to announce the dates for the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand today at 3:30 PM. Along with this, the ECI will also state the schedules of the by-elections of three Lok Sabha seats and more than 47 constituencies in different states. The electoral terms in Maharashtra and Jharkhand are to expire on November 26 and January 5, respectively.
Wayanad (Kerala), Nanded (Maharashtra), and Basirhat (West Bengal) will be the open Lok Sabha seats where by-elections are likely to happen. Former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had vacated the Wayanad seat some time ago, retaining Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. There he had won the last general election from both constituencies. These polls are perceived as the second important electoral event after the Lok Sabha elections, which will be held against the backdrop of the BJP’s excellent performance in Haryana by winning 48 out of 90 seats, in which the BJP emerged victorious nullifying the well-perceived Congress victory.
Despite being weighed down by anti-incumbency factors, the BJP was flying high in Haryana, exceeding predictions and achieving its best-ever vote share. In Maharashtra, the Congress did well, emerging as the largest party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. India’s Alliance will look to capitalize on this momentum as elections approach, as it had won 30 of the 40 seats in Maharashtra during the last general election.
Industrialist Pankaj Oswal on Saturday issued an appeal in the open letter to the President of Uganda, claiming that his 26-year-old daughter Vasundhara Oswal is being illegally detained in Uganda since October 1. Oswal accused the authorities of denying access to legal representatives and her family, referring her detention as an outcome of “corporate and political manipulation.”
Vasundhara, PRO Industries executive director, was arrested based on the charges filed by an employee, who allegedly borrowed $200,000 using the Oswal family as a guarantee against the loan. The employee, too, is charged with theft. After a court order to release Vasundhara, the police filed additional charges that Oswal describes as “inadmissible” to keep her from getting out on bail.
Oswal himself filed an appeal to United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and elaborated his daughter’s disturbing conditions of interrogation where, according to him, were also accompanied by hours of unwanted questioning without the presence of counsel. To Oswal, unlawful detention and mistreatment has caused Vasundhara to suffer very much emotionally and a recent anxiety attack has been exacerbated by the actions of the authorities.
This businessman has come out as a philanthropist for the ousted Kerala woman Sandhya. Bigger than other billionaires, MA Yusuff Ali, chairman of the Lulu Group, has stepped up to help the Kerala woman recently ousted from her residence in order to settle the unpaid loan. All the media were filled with the news of this poor woman’s plight, and after getting into the issue, he asked his team to return the whole ₹8 lakh she had taken as a loan, while he also gave her an additional ₹10 lakh to save her from further debts to set her life back on track.
Sandhya and her husband had taken a loan of ₹4 lakh from Manappuram Finance in 2019 for building their home. After her husband deserted the family in 2021, Sandhya was unable to pay her installments. The interest mounted, and the loan ballooned to ₹8 lakh. With multiple warnings, there was no stop in initiating the foreclosed process, and she was not even allowed to stay in the house. She along with her two children was left without a roof above their heads.
Indeed, interventional act of Yusuff Ali has restored once again the faith of Sandhya in human race and has brought to the fore community support when going gets tough.
Observing judicial restraint on election issues, the Supreme Court of India, under Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, refused to interfere in the running panchayat elections in Punjab and refused an interim order that would have called off the polls. The bench said disruption of polling processes would cause unnecessary chaos.
This is after a plea from lawyers to have a stay on the elections. They responded that still another order, that one by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, had actually suspended the polls but was itself revoked on October 14. But this time the Supreme Court underlined that once the poll process has begun, judicial intervention might have severe reactions and this will also set a trend of note: no election is worth being stopped once the poll process has begun.
The T20 Spring Challenge has given the young talent a great chance with the inclusion of 13-year-old seam bowler Mia Barwick in the Hobart Hurricanes squad. She replaces Heather Graham who has been called into the Australian national camp for the T20 World Cup, following Tayla Vlaeminck’s injury.
Barwick, who has already made her mark in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League and represented her state in Under-16 and Under-19 national championships, is going to experience the most challenging part of her early career. She was seen carrying drinks for her team in their recent match against the Perth Scorchers and is likely to be seen later in the tournament.
The Hurricanes have continued with their philosophy of developing a homegrown talent, where young players get the exposure of professional-level cricket at quite an early age.
According to a recent Spanish study, 3% of schoolchildren suffer from both symptoms of autism and those of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, while about 0.5% could be classified for diagnosis with both disorders. The article features in the journal Autism Research and underlines the urgent need to recognize neurodevelopmental disorders in children quickly.
There were 33% of children diagnosed with autism who showed traits of ADHD. For this, the percentage was much higher in older children than younger ones: 46% vs 22%. The prevalence rose with age. Although only 16% of children fell into both categories for both autism and ADHD traits, which had been formally diagnosed, teachers reported signs of both disorders and parents agreed virtually across the board.
The study stipulates early screening for autism and ADHD in both the school and family setting to enable the effected children to receive timely intervention and support based on the high rate of co-occurrence.
In Singapore, an Indian national, Periyasamy Mathiyazhagan, has been sentenced to nine weeks in jail after he withdrew ₹16 lakh mistakenly credited to his account to discharge debts and send a part of the money to his family, with whom he stays back in India. The incident came to the fore when a former employer inadvertently deposited SGD 25,000, equivalent to ₹16 lakh, into Mathiyazhagan’s account in April 2023.
However, Mathiyazhagan did not keep quiet there. Since he knew of the error, he transferred the amount to another account and used it for personal expenditure. Once the company realized its error, it tried to recover the amount but in vain since the bank had updated the man’s address long back. It was then that the company approached the police and arrested Mathiyazhagan, who went to serve his sentence.
During interrogation, he owned up to the infraction of using the money but begged for more time to refund the money. Still, none of the money has been brought forth and is now left to face his sentence.
One US surgeon has taken to social media to defend herself against racist messages she received over a picture of herself she posted in a backless dress. She shared screenshots of the messages and said that she had worn the dress to a family function, was offended by unsolicited critisms that followed the image, and therefore decided to air them all on social media.
Many took to the social media in support of the surgeon, reasoning that one might wonder why her dress was an issue in the first place. Some users complimented how elegant the dress was and suggested that she unblock the sender rather than engage them in what might just become some negative conversation. From the doctor’s response, it is quite clear that this was a challenge many women had been dealing with regarding body shaming and unsolicited commentary online regarding even as innocuous of a dress that she wore for the family gathering.
