A week after the violent jailbreak attempt at Makala central prison in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation is still tense and tragic.
The incident happened early on Monday when intense gunfire spread panic among the people of this part of town. Videos, widely spread on social media, show prisoners attempting to flee in darkness, their torches lighting the way out as the sounds of padlocks being broken and gunfire filled the air.
The Congolese authorities confirmed that at least 129 prisoners were killed during the incident: some were shot by security forces, while others were crushed and asphyxiated in the chaos. The prison, presently operating at ten times its intended capacity, has been regularly filled with such outbursts.
Officials said no prisoners had escaped, but accounts from inmates and prisoners’ rights groups estimated that nearly 2,000 inmates were unaccounted for, raising serious questions about the veracity of the official statements and the condition inside the prison.
The Makala prison incident is a pointer to the very dismal state of affairs that pertains in the Congolese prison system, where the two most fundamental problems-overcrowding and poor conditions-are a catalyst for such tragic events.
