Researchers at the University of Cambridge recently proposed that reducing flight speed may just be one of the most critical steps toward curbing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. Notably, the aviation sector is considered one of the most significant causes of climate change and accounts for 4 percent of the drivers. The latter released about 915 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019.
The International Air Transport Association has reaffirmed its commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this study sets out how short-term action may play a significant part in helping the industry meet that goal.
The major sustainable aviation goal identified in this study is as follows:
Reduce Flight Speeds: Cutting flights to 15 percent below maximum speed could decrease fuel consumption by 5-7%. That would mean that some journeys would be up to 50 minutes longer, but it would dramatically cut emissions. That requires coordinated action by the airlines, airports and aircraft manufacturers-points Professor Rob Miller, of Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory, made particularly forcefully.
Fly Newer Planes: Newer aircraft could save fuel by 11-14%. It recommends that the fleet retirement age be reduced from 30 to 15 years by 2050. Aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus are likely to increase production in order to meet this requirement.
Contrails, the vapor trails left behind by planes, have a climate impact comparable to CO2 emissions. Optimizing flight routes to avoid ISSRs will reduce this impact while burning a few more drops of fuel.
-SAFs: While cleaner, SAFs are expensive and could drive air travel to 81% costlier. The sector would need to ramp up the production of SAFs 80-100 times just to reach its target of net-zero in 2050.
-Limit Domestic Flights: France outlawed short domestic flights that can be covered by rail in under 2.5 hours. It has seen emissions reduction by 95%. Other countries could do the same.
Israeli air strikes killed at least 22 people in the heart of Beirut, wounding 117 others, after Lebanon’s Hezbollah guerrilla group fired rockets on Israeli cities, saying it targeted Tel Aviv but acknowledging it did not affect the city. The Lebanese health ministry said the number of dead and injured had been confirmed by sources in the ministry. The Lebanese minister also confirmed that 73 other people were wounded in the attack.
According to reports, the airstrike targeted Wafiq Safa, a senior Hezbollah official. The head of Hezbollah’s Liaison and Coordination Unit, however escaped. Retaliating, Hezbollah fired more than 190 rockets along Israeli positions.
Israeli officials have been on edge due to tensions between Israel and Hezbollah for a long time. Experts believe that Iran-backed groups are ever so close to igniting a wider regional conflict.
The product designer, whose resignation email went viral on social media, finished his description of how he left for his new job because of his new boss’s toxic behavior with posting it on Reddit.
He scoffed at the work-life balance idea, saying it’s a “fancy term,” and expected overtime without overtime pay. Shreyas raised an eyebrow and protested; his boss jeered, “That’s just the way it is in the industry.”
Day One of the Job
Shreyas had taken this job, work-from-home, but soon realized that the atmosphere was very different from what he had imagined. He is supposed to be working 12-14 hours a day, without any overtime pay, and when he had brought the point of maintaining the boundaries between personal time and working time, the boss scoffed at him.
In his resignation email, Shreyas detailed what was bothering him: his boss’s inappropriate comments and exploitative work demands. He left with a challenge, claiming that his boss make the conversations public as his behavior was unprofessional and unacceptable. This has sparked a whole rhetoric on toxic work cultures in India.

Terrorism: He reiterated the word terrorism has threatened the world of peace and was calling upon nations to take action against terrorism.
PM Modi’s statement is coming at a time when the geopolitics is becoming more tensed, and India had been playing a vital role in enhancing regional stability.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green will miss the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, which is set to resume at the MCG, if he were to undergo surgery for his recurrent back problem. Green, who has been troubled by back injuries, is considering surgery and that would put him out of action for some time.
Green had hoped initially to feature in the series as a specialist batsman but surgery would rule him out from joining the squad in the five-match Test series which is likely to get underway late in November.
This force the Australian squad to reshuffle its deck with Mitch Marsh likely to fill in and make up for some added responsibilities within the bowling department.
