Biggest Story In India Headlines 10th January 2025
The music fraternity mourns the loss of the legendary playback singer P Jayachandran, who left this world on Thursday evening in Kerala. Known for his magnetic voice and an unmatched ability to evoke emotions, Jayachandran is one of the well-known names in Indian music in many languages.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, writing on X, “Shri P. Jayachandran Ji was blessed with a legendary voice that conveyed a wide range of emotions. His soulful renditions will touch hearts for generations. Pained by his passing. My thoughts are with his family and admirers.”
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan referred to him as an irreplaceable cultural icon, while Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said Jayachandran’s voice would continue to “soothe people’s hearts for decades.”
The singer died at 7:55 PM after collapsing at his home. His body will be kept at the Sahitya Academy Hall in Thrissur for public homage before his funeral at his ancestral home in Chendamangalam on Saturday.
Director Shankar’s Telugu debut, Game Changer, featuring Ram Charan and Kiara Advani, is a cocktail of politics and action. With its fine cast and big production values, the film actually follows Shankar’s known and tested formula narrative, eliciting both nostalgia and criticism.
The movie delves into electoral politics through its protagonist, played by Ram Charan, who champions transparency and reform. The storyline is engrossing and informative, though it fails to tug at the heartstrings, especially in building a rapport with its main character. However, SJ Suryah steals the show with his performance, often outshining even the lead.
Fans of Shankar’s previous works will take solace in the director’s stylistic trademark, but it just about falls short of being a landmark film.
Maya and Leah Tata, daughters of Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata, have been appointed as trustees of the Sir Ratan Tata Industrial Institute (SRTII). This organization, a unit of Sir Ratan Tata Trust, focuses on providing employment opportunities for women.
The appointments follow the resignation of Arnaz Kotwal and Freddy Talati, amid an apparent internal dispute within the institute. Kotwal wrote to fellow trustees expressing her disappointment at being asked to step down, describing the communication as “unexpected and disheartening.”
The appointments are a big move for Noel Tata’s children, who now have a place in all the smaller Tata Trusts but are yet to be inducted into the two main trusts—Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust.
SN Subrahmanyan, the Chairman of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has triggered debates on pay disparity after it was reported that he took home an annual remuneration of ₹51 crore—535 times the average salary of an L&T employee.
This comes after his recent remarks calling for a 90-hour workweek to achieve extraordinary results for India’s development. Following the backlash, L&T released a statement to clarify Subrahmanyan’s comments: “Extraordinary outcomes require extraordinary effort. At L&T, we are committed to fostering a culture driven by passion, purpose, and performance.
The statement underlined L&T’s contribution to nation-building over eight decades, but the pay disparity has reignited debates on income inequality in India.
Congress leader Pawan Khera attacked the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, terming it as “Gabbar Sitharaman Tax” and alleged that it had put a burden on the middle class and farmers.
Khera highlighted the complexities of GST even 90 months after its implementation, noting the frequent issuance of new circulars. “GST was supposed to simplify taxation, but it has become unnecessarily complicated and heartless,” he said.
The remarks come amid calls for revisions to GST rates ahead of the Union Budget 2025. Congress spokesperson Rangarajan Mohan Kumaramangalam described the current tax system as “tax terrorism,” urging the government to rectify its flaws.
Wildfires continue to burn out of control throughout Los Angeles, scorching more than 35,000 acres and displacing thousands of people, including celebrities in Hollywood. The fires, fueled by powerful Santa Ana winds, have destroyed over 10,000 structures and killed at least 10 people.
Some of the hardest-hit areas include Pacific Palisades and Hollywood Hills, where fires have torn through homes and iconic landmarks. The Los Angeles County Fire Chief issued a red flag warning to residents over the high risk of further breakouts.
Emergency crews are working tirelessly to contain the blazes, but with minimal rainfall and dry conditions, challenges persist. Governor Gavin Newsom has deployed over 1,400 personnel to combat the crisis.

Cristiano Ronaldo wasted no time in making headlines this year, scoring his 917th career goal during Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al-Akhdoud. The Portuguese star’s penalty in the 42nd minute extended his streak of scoring in 24 consecutive calendar years, an unmatched feat in football history.
At 39, Ronaldo is still hungry to achieve the 1,000-goal landmark and continues to defy age with his brilliant form. With 43 goals in 2024 and a record 54 goals in 2023, Ronaldo has etched his name as one of the greatest footballers ever.
MI Cape Town made an early statement in the SA20 with a dominating 97-run win over reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St. George’s Park. The highlight of Dewald Brevis’ blistering 57 from 29 got Cape Town a competitive score of 174/7.
On the bowling front, Delano Potgieter was fantastic, returning career-best figures of 5/10, and a hostile opening spell from Trent Boult blew away the Sunrisers top order. Defending champions were bowled out for just 77, marking a disappointing start to their campaign.
Chennaiyin FC will look to turn their fortunes around when they host Odisha FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Sitting in 10th place, Chennaiyin has only won one of their last seven games and will look to break that streak in their first match of 2025.
Coach Owen Coyle has called for defensive discipline, imploring his players to eradicate individual mistakes. Captain Ryan Edwards will return from suspension, and that’s a timely boost for the squad.
Meanwhile, Odisha FC, placed two points shy of a playoff spot, will look to avenge their earlier loss to Chennaiyin this season.
